Keim, Cavalier take Hale Boggs run

LULING – Sherrie Keim and William Martin of Dodge, Texas, made it a family affair at the TransContinental Refining Corporation’s Hale Boggs Bridge 5K Run/Walk Saturday morning.
Keim won the female division, crossing the line at the West Bank Bridge Park in 18 minutes, 30 seconds. Martin, her husband, was the first Masterand the third overall runner to finish with a time of 16:59.
“I’m used to the hills but I didn’t expect it to be this high,” Keim said.
“I’m afraid of heights so I tried to stay on the inside as much as possible.”Keim said she and Martin usually try to run a race just about every weekend, taking a break in the hotter months. She said they do a lot oftraveling and were looking for another race in the area after missing the Camelia City Classic earlier this year. Keim said she usually runs aroundthe 17-minute mark but had to back off because of the heat.
This year’s race was off the pace of last year when Susan Molloy set the female record with a time of 17:25 and Passmore Furusa won the men’s race in 14:97.
Gene Cavalier of Chalmette won this year’s men division in a time of 16:03. Cavalier, who placed second last year in 15:13, led at both the one-mile and two-mile marks. Chris Singley of Metairie was second, followedby Martin.
Harvey’s Derrick Lee repeated as the men’s Masters’ division because Martin, as the first Master to cross, finished in the top three overall. TheGrand-masters’ division was won by J. Roger Brown of New Orleans.Isabelle Yanire of Baton Rouge placed second in the female division ahead of Tina Zellner of Slidell. New Orleans’ Harriet Handshaw placed first inthe Masters’ division while Yvonne Lee of Zachary took first in the Grandmasters’ division.
Overall winners in the men’s and women’s categories received $250.
Second place finishers in both categories received $150 while third place finishers received $100. First place winners in the Masters and Grandmas-ters categories also received $100. First place finishers in each of the 10age groups received $50.
The run started in the East Bank Bridge Park in Destrehan, crossed the bridge spanning the Mississippi River and concluded in front of the West Bank Bridge Park in Luling. Proceeds from the annual event benefit theUnited Way of St. Charles Parish and the 34 agencies it funds.
