Destrehan batters get on track against Ursuline

DESTREHAN – Holly Gagliano and Thyme Yoes had two hits apiece as the Destrehan Lady Cats defeated Ursuline, 9-2, in the Rumble on the River Tourna-ment at the Eastbank Bridge Park Saturday afternoon.
The Lady Cats (1-4), after a 7-2 loss to Ecole Classique earlier in the day, would later fall to John Ehret and Bonnabel in the tournament. Mt. Carmelwould go on to win the tournament by defeating John Ehret in the finals.
“We didn’t hit the ball as well as I liked,” Destrehan coach Jemi LaHaye said. “We were in every game, we just didn’t get the hits we needed withpeople on base. But we should be ready before we face the big boys indistrict.”The Lady Cats were able to produce with runners on against Ursuline. Withone out in the bottom of the first, Katie Kolwe drew a walk against Ursuline starter Jennifer Nicholson, went to second on a wild pitch and scored as Jennifer Eskine doubled to right field.
Gagliano followed with a double into the left field corner to plate Eskine.
After a single to left by Yoes, Kim Bierman grounded out to second, scoring Gagliano to make it 3-0.
Destrehan expanded its lead in the bottom of the second. Stephanie Pocheopened the inning with a single to left and advanced to second on a wild pitch.
Nicole Peltier followed with a single to left and went to second on the throw into the infield. Poche came in to score on a safety squeeze byMelissa Anderson. Peltier scored on a wild pitch as Kolwe was drawing awalk, making it 5-0.
After Eskine flied out and Gagliano singled to left, Yoes brought in Kolwe with a double to left. Gagliano and Yoes scored on a throwing error by theshortstop on Bierman’s grounder, increasing the lead to 8-0.
Destrehan added a run in the bottom of the third as Poche led off with a walk and stole second and third. After Anderson and Kolwe walked to loadthe bases, Eskine reached on an error as Poche scored.
Ursuline broke through for two runs in the top of the fourth against Kolwe.
With one out, Ashley Bowman walked and went to third on a single by Meghan Landry.
Bowman scored as Landry stole second with Landry coming in as Christine LeBlanc reached on an error with two outs. Rachel Scheider walked butKolwe struck out Amy Palestino looking to end the inning. The game wascalled in the bottom of the inning due to the time limit.
Kolwe got the win for the Lady Cats, allowing two hits while striking out one and walking two.
Destrehan travels to Archbishop Blenk today and plays John Curtis at Harahan Playground tomorrow.
