Third quarter surge leads Wildcats

RESERVE – East St. John out-scored Central Lafourche 25-5 in the thirdquarter on its way to a 80-56 victory in District 6-5A action Tuesday night.
East St. John improved to 8-14 overall and 5-6 in district play with thewin.
Clement Carter had a game-high 21 points to lead the Wildcats. RoydellWilliams added 17 points while Darwin Pittman tossed in 14 and Sam Martin 12.
Darius Griffin paced the Trojans with 16 points. Kenny Plaisancecontributed 12 points while Dwaghn Hadley added 11 points.
Central Lafourche took a 34-31 lead on its opening possession of the second half on a put back by Courtney Smith. Williams gave the Wildcatsthe lead for good with a jumper from the right baseline and added a 3- pointer from the left corner on the next trip down the court to make it 38- 34.
Griffen passed inside to Hadley to bring the Trojans to within two. But ajumper by Carter from the right baseline started a 19-1 run. A drive byWilliams and a 3-pointer by Carter from the right side built the lead to 44-37.
Chad Henry made it a 14-point game by driving the lane and scooping up a layup while being fouled, hitting the free throw with 1:32 left. Twopossessions later, Lawrence Johnson grabbed a steal, passed to Martin and got it back for a layup. A three-point play on a put back by Louis Gardenermade it 56-37 before Plaisance broke Central Lafourche’s scoreless spell with a layup.
A free throw by Griffin brought the Trojans to within 16 early in the fourth. But Williams found Pittman inside and then came back with arebound, bouncing a pass downcourt to Carter who finished with a one- handed slam. A put back by Johnson made it 64-44.Central Lafourche pulled to within 66-51 on a 3-pointer by Julius Williams and a jumper by Griffen. But Martin came up with a stealunderneath the Central Lafourche basket and laid it in and Pittman followed with a drive to build the lead back to 19. Two possessions later,Floyd Smith grabbed a rebound and found Carter down court for a thundering dunk. Williams followed with a layup to make it 76-51.Central Lafourche stormed out of the gates to take an 8-0 lead on a jumper by Griffen. East St. John got its first points on a jumper by Martinat the 4:57 mark. A 3-pointer from the right corner by Griffen increasedthe lead back to 13-6. A layup by Martin off a steal by Smith and a putback by Darwin brought the Wildcats to within 15-14 at the end of the first quarter.
Carter’s 3-pointer from the right corner gave the Wildcats their first lead at 19-18 with 7:05 left in the second quarter.
After a jumper by Plais-ance, two more 3-pointers by Carter from the right corner helped the Wildcats take a 25-22 lead.
Central Lafourche came back to take a 27-25 lead on a 3-pointer by Williams and a jumper by Hadley. After a jumper by Martin, Smith grabbeda steal and passed to Williams who found Carter downcourt for the dunk. Apass from Williams to Pittman inside gave the Wildcats the lead before Courtney Smith scored on a put back to give the Trojans a 32-31 halftime lead.
