The 1999 Carnival season is hard upon us, prompting a word of caution.

This is a time for families in the River Parishes to enjoy the hard work put forth by the various krewe organizations. Let’s appreciate that workand have fun at the parades and balls in the coming weeks.

At the same time, let’s also set a good example for our children by staying sober and under control. Children look first to their parents for guidanceand if all they see is drinking and boorish behavior, that’s what they will do as well.

Young children also get excited and want to chase after throws during parades. Parents must take responsibility to know where their childrenare at all times to avoid accidents and tragic situations.

Carnival is a time to set aside troubles, not generate or inspire new ones.

It’s a time for happiness, not drunken revelry and irresponsible parenting.

Carnival is a lot more fun when you can remember what you saw and did.

And there is no good time to lose a child to a tragic, preventable situation.

Let’s be careful out there.
