Winn Dixie opens new Luling storeBy LEONARD GRAY / L’Observateur / January 20, 1999LULING – Winn-Dixie opened its doors at its new location near Lakewood Drive and U.S. Highway 90 Thursday morning with music, balloons, flowersand speeches.

Co-owners of the new supermarket are Scott Stephens of St. Rose andRandy Michel of Harvey. The market employs 250 people and includes ahost of services for its customers, including optional computerized self- serve checkout lanes, photo lab, dry cleaning, full-service pharmacy, bakery, on-duty chef, deli-cafe, florist, tobacco shop and much more.

“We have served Luling residents for over 30 years, and we are proud to introduce one of our most advanced store designs to the area,” Raymond Lunn, Winn-Dixie president, stated in a press release.

Previous to this location, Winn-Dixie operated on Paul Maillard Road at two successive sites, dating back to the late 1960s. The last location, at1124 Paul Maillard, closed Wednesday at 10 p.m.”We’re here to serve our customers,” Michel told the assembly of local dignitaries and customers. “We have a great line of managers andemployees.”The new Winn-Dixie doubled the number of employees to accommodate all the services and will be open 24 hours a day, seven days a week.

The new store was welcomed by Sheriff Greg Champagne, Parish Councilmen “Ram” Ramchandran, Dickie Duhe, Brian Champagne and Bill Sirmon and School Board member Steve Crovetto.

Also helping in the store’s operation is a new traffic signal placed at the intersection of Willowdale Boulevard and U.S. 90, slowing traffic betweenWillowdale and Lakewood Drive.

The store includes a fruit and salad bar, seafood case, prestige-meat case, cheese shop and a Bell South Mobility sales location.

“Our goal is to create a supermarket that caters to the tastes and needs of the modern shopper,” Lunn said. “We have created more convenience andhave broadened selection in a more vibrant and efficient setting.

Ultimately, we’re offering the consumer a more complete shopping experience.”Winn-Dixie operates 1,170 stores in 14 states and the Bahamas, including 87 stores in Louisiana and Mississippi.
