East Jefferson halts Hahnville’s run in regionals

KENNER – The Hahnville Lady Tigers gave it a run, advancing to the regionals for the second year in a row before falling to East Jefferson, 17-15, 15-7, at the State Farm/LHSAA state volleyball tournament Thursday at the Pontchartrain Center.
Hahnville ended its season at 13-16 while East Jefferson (30-6) advanced to play Mount Carmel in the quarterfinals Friday.
East Jefferson grabbed a 6-0 in the first game behind an ace by Danielle Tuckson and three by Teryn Taranto. Hahnville cut the deficit to 6-2 on anace by Liz Landry and a kill by Jennifer Hicks before the Lady Warriors answered with a dink by Tuckson and a Hahnville error to take their biggest lead at 10-2.
Hahnville again bounced back, pulling to 10-6 on a dink and a kill by Landry and two errors by East Jefferson. A kill by Theresa Samuels increased thelead back to 12-6 but Hahnville answered on its next serve, using two aces and a kill by Landry, a kill by Jackie Witmer and an East Jefferson error to pull to within 12-11.
Two serves later, the Lady Tigers took their first lead on a kill by Wicks and an error by East Jefferson.
After East Jefferson tied the score, Flora Brown made it 14-13 with a kill. East Jefferson regained the lead at 15-14 on a kill by Samuels and anace by Tuckson. Hahnville tied the score at 15 but East Jefferson got thegame winner when Samuels’ shot was blocked out.
East Jefferson went ahead 3-1 in the second game on a kill by Samuels and an ace by Tuckson. Hahnville pulled to within 5-3 on kills by Landry andHicks before East Jefferson answered with an ace by Tuckson to make it a four-point game. Another ace by Patrice Dillion helped build the lead to10-3.
Hahnville rallied on its next serve, using kills by Hicks and Witmer to pull to within 10-6. But East Jefferson again answered as kills by Tuckson andMonica Winford and a dink by Tuckson helped the Lady Warriors build a 14- 6 lead.
Hahnville made it 14-7 on an East Jefferson error but the Lady Warriors got the game winner as Landry’s spike attempt went long.
Samuels led the Lady Warriors with seven blocks and six kills. Winford hadeight digs while Taranto had 15 assists and Tuckson four aces.
The Lady Tigers were led by Landry with eight kills, three blocks and three aces. Brown had five digs while Bridgit Humphreys had 10 assists.”I was pleased with the will and desire,” Hahnville coach Mendi LeBoeuf said. “I thought we showed great heart and team effort and that is all youcan ask for as a coach.” Hahnville swept Higgins, 15-13, 15-13, in the bi-district round Wednesday morning.
In the first game, the Lady Tigers jumped out to a 5-3 lead behind a kill by Landry and aces by Brown and Lindsey Yochim.
Higgins came back to take a 9-7 advantage behind two aces off the jump serve of Jenny Liljeberg. An ace by Brittany Schneider gave the LadyHurricanes the lead at 11-10 but Hicks came back on Hahnville’s next serve with an ace to regain the lead at 12-11.
After a timeout by Higgins, Hicks delivered another ace and Landry followed with a block to make it 14-11. Higgins held off the serve andpulled to within 14-13 on its next two serves before Landry got the game winner with a kill.
On its second serve of the second game, Hahnville scored nine straight points with Landry serving. Witmer opened the run with a kill and added adink and a block. Hicks also had a block and a kill during the run withLandry getting the ninth point with an ace.
Higgins began to chip into the lead, pulling to within 11-7 behind a block by Courtney Autin and a kill by Angela Ingram. The Lady Tigers answeredwith an ace by Brown and kills by Landry and Witmer to extend the lead to14-7.
Higgins again rallied, scoring six unanswered points to make it 14-13 on a kill and a block by Ingram and a lob by Liljeberg. But Yochim broke theserve with a dink and Landry got the match winner with a kill that was deflected out.
Brown had two aces and two digs for the Lady Tigers. Landry contributedeight kills and a block while Humphreys set up the attack with eight assists. Higgins, which finished the season at 2-24, was led by Ingramwith six kills and three blocks. Schneider had four digs while Liljeberghad three aces and Trang Tran four assists.
