The St. Charles Parish Parks and Recreation Department is lookingfor youth basketball officials. A four-week training session will be heldat the West Bank Bridge Park Recreation Office. The first session willbegin Monday. Officials who complete the four-week training session willbe paid $15 per game during the basketball season.

The St. Charles Parish Triad organization will be holding its secondannual Triad Golf Tournament Saturday, Nov. 20, at Fashion Golf andCountry Club in Hahnville.

The 4-man scramble begins at 11 a.m. The cost per player is $35 and holesponsors for $50. Triad is a joint effort between St. Charles ParishSheriff’s Office and St. Charles Council on Aging to improve the quality oflife for seniors throughout our parish.

The St. John Parish Sheriff’s Office is sponsoring several huntersafety classes this fall. Classes will be held at the St. John ParishSheriff’s Office, Division Headquarters Squad Room, located at Deputy Barton Granier Drive in LaPlace.

Class times will be from 5:30-9:15 p.m. Saturday’s class will begin at 8a.m. at Nick’s Shooting Range in Garyville. The next classes are Nov. 16-18and 20.

There is no charge for these classes. Registration is mandatory. Minimumage is 10 years old. Participants must attend each day for certification. Please call 652-9513 or 652-7058 to register or if you have any questions.

The 15th annual Louisiana Hunters Against Poachers general membership meeting will be held Dec. 1, 1999 at 6 p.m. at the St. JamesBoat Club, 39180 Highway 61 in Gramercy.

The public is invited. There will be a jambalaya dinner, vendor displays,door prizes, raffels, deer mount displays and a special children’s trophy display. Guest speakers include Louisiana Depart-ment of Wildlife andFisheries representatives, political representatives and special guests.

The AAU Baseball and Softball Program will conduct two evaluation camps in December in Brenham, Texas.

Camp dates are Dec. 11-12 for softball and Dec. 18-19 for baseball. The camps are designed to aid and inform the athlete and their parents on what they need to do to take a higher step in baseball or softball. Eachcamp will include a seminar that will cover topics such as the academic side of college athletics, how to contact coaches, how to attain information that will aid in your search for a good college situation and where to go to be seen by college coaches and pro scouts.

The athletes will be put through skill tests and live scrimmages to determine their level of play. All players will receive an evaluation oftheir skills that includes the information derived at the camps and tips and information that may enhance their chances of advancing in their sport. Evaluations will be put into a catalog and sent to all collegebaseball and softball coaches along with all pro scouts in Texas and Louisiana.

The camps will be conducted by college coaches and pro scouts with many years of experience in evaluating the talents of athletes. The camps areopen to all high school age players, freshmen through seniors. For moreinformation, call Frank Dornier at 281-469-6721.

For the 10th consecutive year, mall-based athletic specialty retailer Footaction USA is offering $100,000 in college scholarships to high school seniors. This year, Footaction will award at least 84 scholarships,including one at $10,000, one at $5,000, two at $2,500 and 80 at $1,000.

The deadline for applications is January 15, 2000.

Applicants are judged on the basis of financial need, class rank and standardized test scores and level of sports participation. A group of 300semifinalists will be selected by an independent administrator.

Semifianlistss will be required to complete a more detailed application and submit additional information, including a 250-word essay.

Bernard, St. Tammany and St. Charles parishes to turn extra or unwantedvehicles into “something special for Special Olympics.”An individual can call the “Share the Victory” toll-free number and Special Olympics will arrange to tow away their motor vehicle for free.

The vehicle will be recycled into the funds needed to support the year- round program of sports training and athletic competition for mentally- retarded children and adults in Louisiana.

Vehicles can be in any condition to qualify as long as the owner has the title. Consumers may also be able to take advantage of a tax deduction asthe fair market price of the vehicle is considered a tax deductible donation to Special Olympics.
