DEAR EDITOR: As a new Girl Scout leader, I have found there is a tremendous need for adult volunteers to serve as troop leaders and co-leaders in our LaPlace community. There are many young ladies who would love to be able toparticipate in Girl Scouting, but the supply and demand for leaders just isn’t meeting up.
Anyone over the age of 18 with some spare time, an open mind, a sense of adventure, and a positive attitude can be a troop leader, including housewives, moms, grandmas, relatives, college students and even dads.
Don’t worry! The Girl Scout Council will give you the required training and there is always someone that can answer any of your questions, as well as give advice. There is a wide range of dates, times, and locations providedfor training to accommodate busy schedules.
Please don’t have the misconception that Girl Scouts is only about cookies, crafts and camping. It’s a lot more than that! The four main program goals that we focus on are: (1) Developing girls to their fullest individual potential, by building their self-esteem; (2) Helping our girls learn how to relate well with others, such as their peers, elders and the general public; (3) Helping the girls develop a meaningful set of values that will allow them to make sound decisions, which is extremely important in today’s world; and (4) Teaching our girls how to make a positive improvement to society.
It is important that the young ladies who will lead us into the next millennium have the proper knowledge and skills to conquer the battles that are facing them. And who better to lead them, than you?Anyone interested in becoming a part of the Girl Scout experience should call Jack Castro at the Girl Scout Council at 733-8220. Your help is veryappreciated. If not you, then who?
