RESERVE – With its starting quarterback on the sidelines, East St. Johnwent to an old formula – defense and a running game – to defeat Warren Easton, 21-7, Friday night at Joe Keller Stadium.

East St. John improved to 1-2 with the win. Warren Easton fell to 1-2.East St. John got on the scoreboard in the second quarter on a 23-yard runby Terron Charles. Billy Hogan added the extra point. The Wildcats wentahead in the third quarter, 14-7, on a 27-yard pass from Randy Sutherland to Chris Bush and Hogan’s extra point. A 5-yard run by Chuckie Burl in thefourth quarter completed the scoring.

“It was a win and that was what we needed,” East St. John coach RonnieStephens said. “We are happy about that. We made a lot of mistakes but wewon. It will help us going into district play.”Jarrod Nabor started the game at quarterback for the Wildcats and completed 10-of-16 passes for 64 yards. He was intercepted twice.Sutherland came in in the second half to complete 4-of-6 passes for 55 yards and a touchdown while throwing one interception.

Roydel Williams caught four passes for 43 yards. Chris Bush had threereceptions for 51 yards and a score and had a solid night punting the ball.

Louis Gardner added two catches for 21 yards.

The running game accounted for 208 yards on 41 attempts. Burl led theway with 15 carries for 69 yards and a touchdown.

Brandon August had 58 yards on 10 carries and Tremaine Moore added 49 yards on nine attempts. Charles ran three times for 32 yards and atouchdown.

“We had to stay within what the quarterbacks could do,” Stephens said.

“I thought they both did OK. They got us through the game and we won andthat was what they were supposed to do.”The Wildcat defense held Easton to 52 total yards, 40 of which came on a screen play in the second quarter for the Eagles’ only score.

“The defense did a great job,” Stephens said.

“We were very enthusiastic and got to the football.”
