LAPLACE – Two yards and 12 seconds.

That’s how close St. Charles Catholic came from having a chance to upsetNewman Friday night.

Newman stopped the Comets’ Doug Friloux on fourth-and-2 from the Greenies 33-yard line, preserving a 20-19 victory in the non-district contest played at Lupin Field.

The Comets fell to 1-3 with the loss while Newman improved to 3-1.

Newman took a 20-10 lead into the final four minutes before the Comets mounted a rally. First, it was Jason Waguespack nailing a 44-yard field topull the Comets to within 20-13. Then it was Nick Monica finding KipVerbeek from 21 yards out to make it 20-19.

Waguespack missed the extra point, leaving it a one-point game. St.Charles Catholic attempted an onsides kick which was recovered by Mark Arceneaux at the Greenies 41. On third-and-4 from the 35, Friloux gainedtwo yards on third down but was stopped for no gain on fourth down.

Phil Hoffman gave Newman an early 7-0 lead with a 30-yard touchdown run in the first quarter. The Comets tied the game at 7 on a 1-yard run byTodd Babin and went ahead 10-7 just before the half on a 36-yard field goal by Waguespack. Dwayne Jones scored from 59 yards out and David DeLaureal hit Will Walter on an 18-yard pass to give the Greenies their 10- point lead in the fourth quarter.

“The kids played hard,” St. Charles Catholic coach Frank Monica said. “Thekids gave an excellent effort. We had our chances early in the game and wehad our chances at the end to win it. Newman is an excellent team. We keptplaying extremely hard. We got four turnovers from them but gave twoback.”Monica said while there are still things that need to be worked on, the team got a lot from the game.

“We had some real positives come out of it,” Monica said. “We matured andgrew up as a football team.”The Comets will look to bounce back Friday night as they celebrate Homecoming against Parkview Baptist. Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m. atThomas Dupuy Stadium.

Parkview Baptist (3-1) is coming off a 30-20 victory against Jewel Sumner last Friday. The Eagles held a Sumner team that was averaging 39points a game scoreless through the first three quarters. Jeremy Hill had109 yards rushing and two touchdowns and quarterback Josh Son added 107 yards and a score.

Parkview has 14 new starters this season. One returning is Son whogained over 1,000 yards in total offense last season. He has scored seventimes this season. Center Toby Comeaux is the only returning starter onthe offensive line. Defensive lineman Rustin Mistric and Tyler Tullos,linebacker Anthony Camp and defensive back Jason Robertson return on defense.

St. Charles Catholic opens District 9-3A play at Lutcher next Friday.
