Household Hazardous Material Collection Day is set Oct. 16 from 9 a.m. to1 p.m. at two sites.Too often, items such as tires are dumped by the side of the highway and old motor oil allowed to run into the culverts and ditches.

Items such as oil-based paint, latex paint, tires, vehicle batteries, used motor oil, antifreeze, household cleaning products, aerosol cans, fluorescent lights, tars, adhesives, pesticides, herbicides, resins, acids and bases will all be accepted.

In St. Charles Parish, the dropoff point is the Shrine Temple, 1940 OrmondBlvd., Destrehan. In St. John Parish, the dropoff point is at the old K-marton Airline Highway, LaPlace (in front of the jail).

Certain items cannot be accepted. These include explosives, ammunition,medical waste, compressed gas cylinders, asbestos and smoke alarms.

In addition, residents are asked not to bring paper, cardboard, plastic, glass, aluminum cans or other scrap metal, as parish recycling programs will accept those. In addition, the Norco Lions accepts aluminum cans,while John L. Ory Elementary accepts old newspapers. Behind the PercyHebert courthouse annex in LaPlace is a facility for old tires and auto batteries.

The collection day is co-sponsored by the following local industries: Marathon/Ashland, DuPont Dow elastomers, Union Carbide, Shell/Motiva, Stockhausen, DuPont, OxyChem, Epsilon, Nalco, Monsanto and Montell Polyolefins.

On Nov. 14, 1998, the program collected 13,000 pounds of waste. Of this,65 percent was recycled by local organizations or companies, 15 percent was recovered as fuel and only 23 percent remained for treatment or disposal.

The program was also helped by the Louisiana Department of Environmental Quality.
