LUTCHER – Lutcher’s journey through the cream of the crop in Class 4A continues this week as the Bulldogs travel to Walker.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.Lutcher (3-0) is coming off a 28-6 victory over Capitol, which was ranked 16th in the poll going into the game. This week, the Bulldogs, ranked 10thin last week’s Class 3A poll, play the seventh-ranked Wildcats (3-0).

Walker and Capitol are also both members of District 6-4A.

Thomas Ricks had his best passing game of the season, completing 8-of- 16 passes for 138 yards and two touchdowns, including a 71-yard strike to Kenneth Johnson. Johnson had three receptions for 107 yards and twotouchdowns, giving him eight catches for 225 yards and three scores on the season. Damian Ursin ran for 102 yards and a touchdown to help theBulldogs to 328 total yards of offense in the game. The Lutcher defenseheld Capitol to 197 total yards, 68 on the ground.

Lutcher will be facing a Walker team coming off a 42-14 victory over McKinley. Demond Williams, a 5-11, 220-pound back, rushed for 183 yardsand a 75-yard touchdown on 29 attempts. Byron Lockhart, another 220-pound back, added 51 yards, including a 40-yard touchdown run.

The Walker defense held McKinley to 168 total yards and forced four turnovers. The defense also got on the scoreboard, returning a fumble anda interception for scores and recording a safety.

That defense is led by linebacker Lionel Turner, an early commitment to LSU. Turner is an all-around threat, catching two touchdown passes Fridaynight while also handling the punting duties. He is one of seven returningstarters on the Wildcat defense, joined by lineman Allen Watson and defensive backs Bred Bennett, Lucien Weber and William Lloyd.

Williams opened the season with a 153-yard performance against Belaire.

Lockhart filled in for the injured Williams in the Wildcats’ victory over H.L. Bourgeois in week two and ran for 158 yards and two touchdowns.Quarterback Mike Dumiller has thrown for over 200 yards and five touchdowns this season. Top targets are Turner and receiver Ronnie Bell. Lutcher hosts another Class 4A team in Assumption next week.

ST. JAMES-ASSUMPTION

ST. JAMES – Warning to other Class 3A schools – St. James may be hittingits stride.

The Wildcats started slow against Bastrop Friday night but began hitting on all gears in the second quarter, rolling up 410 yards in offense in the 35-0 victory over the Rams, fourth-ranked in Class 4A.

St. James (2-1), ranked fifth in Class 3A, will look to continue thatmomentum as it travels to Assumption Friday.

Kickoff is scheduled for 7 p.m.Corey Webster led the way against Bastrop, completing 9-of-14 passes for 170 yards and two touchdowns. Travell Steib led the rushing attackwith 81 yards. The Wildcat defense limited the Rams to 114 total yards,37 through the air, and intercepted four passes. Jereal Dillon had twointerceptions, returning one 35 yards for a touchdown.

Webster is one of the leading passers in the area, connecting on 24 of his 45 passes for 411 yards and five touchdowns. He has also been interceptedonly once. Davin Dennis has caught 12 passes for 191 yard and two scoreswhile tight end Alvin Bartholomew has seven catches for 115 yards and two scores.

The Wildcats have had three running backs go over the century mark for the season. Travell Steib has 27 carries for 242 yards and a score. LeslieAubert has rushed 18 times for 150 yards while Montrell Steib has carried 24 times for 101 yards.

The Wildcat defense has held opponents to 761 yards (254 yards per game) and have forced 12 turnovers.

Assumption, a member of District 9-4A, is 1-2 on the season after losing to E.D. White, 21-7, Friday. The Mustangs were held to 88 total yards,including seven yards through the air, and committed two turnovers.

Brandon Jacobs scored the Mustangs only points on a 6-yard run and had 82 yards on 15 carries.

The defense held E.D. White to 179 yards but 118 yards came on the ground. Assumption, which went 10-3 and advanced to the quarterfinals a year, ago, returns split end Jason Bell and flanker Kenny Boudreaux at the skill positions. Jacobs will be joined in the backfield by Rudy August andquarterback Herbert Washington.

All five starters on the offensive line are first time starters this season.

On defense, five starters return, including end Clint Campo and linebackers Lance Rodrigue and Bryan Johnson.

St. James hosts Booker T. Washington in its final pre-district tuneup nextweek.

ST. CHARLES CATHOLIC-NEWMAN

LAPLACE – St. Charles Catholic faces an old district rival, Newman, thisweek after a two-year hiatus in the series.

But a few things will be missing from the games that were played between the teams earlier this decade. Unlike in the past, this will nothave a bearing on the district standings with the Comets playing in Class 3A and Newman remaining in Class 2A. And for the first time in years,there are no Mannings on the Newman roster.

St. Charles Catholic enters the game at 1-2 while Newman is 2-1. Kickoffis scheduled for 7 p.m.Cooper Manning is now a broadcaster. Peyton Manning has gone on tostardom with the Tennessee Volunteers and now with the Indianapolis Colts. And Eli Manning is a freshman at Ole Miss.David de Laureal, a senior has taken the younger Manning’s place at quarterback. De Laureal passed for over 175 yards and two touchdowns inthe Greenies’ 22-19 win over St. Bernard Friday. For the season, he haspassed for 470 yards and seven touchdowns.

Will Walter has been de Laureal’s favorite target, catching nine passes for 206 yards and four touchdowns going into last Friday’s game, and adding another touchdown reception against St. Bernard. Matt Glaser, an all-state selection last year at tackle, returns to lead the offensive line. Dwayne Jones is also one of the leading rushers in the areain Class 2A with over 100 yards per game.

Newman’s defense held St. Bernard to 21 yards passing but allowed 265yards on the ground Friday. The week before, the Greenies gave up 50points and 388 yards in a 50-42 loss to Jewel Sumner. That defense is ledby senior linebackers Michael Hecker and Scott Stewart.

St. Charles Catholic is coming off a 28-7 loss at Lawless Fridayafternoon. The Comets fell behind 28-0 before Anthony Jacob scored in thefourth quarter on a 1-yard run.

St. Charles Catholic was held to minus 37 yards rushing and 172 yards inoffense. The Comet defense limited the Pythians to four yards on theground but gave up 273 yards passing.

St. Charles Catholic hosts Parkview Baptist next Friday to end non-district play.
