ESJ holds off late St. Charles rally

BOUTTE – East St. John jumped out to a 10-0 lead and then held off a lateSt. Charles Catholic rally for a 10-6 victory in the Roussel’s GoodyearRiver Parishes Jamboree Friday night at Hahnville.

Floyd Smith led the Wildcats with 7 completions in 11 attempts for 81 yards and a 26-yard touchdown pass to Darwin Pittman. Chuckie Burlcarried 12 times for 84 yards to leading the running game.

The East St. John defense held the Comets to 16 yards rushing. JasonWaguespack completed 7-of-9 passes for 71 yards. Nick Monica hit five ofhis seven passes for 24 yards.

East St. John drove down the field on its first possession of the secondhalf behind the running of Burl. Taking over at the Wildcats’ 36, Burlcarried four straight times for 29 yards.

Ricky Madere saved a touchdown by tipping away a Smith pass to Roydel Williams on the left sideline. But after a 4-yard gain by Burl, Smith foundPittman over the middle. Pittman split two defenders inside the 10 andwent in for the score to make it 10-0 with seven minutes left.

St. Charles Catholic came right back on its next possession. On third-and-13 from the 27, Waguespack found John Bordelon for 12 yards. DustinBraud then picked up the first down with a 2-yard gain off the second effort.

Two plays later, Waguespack picked up the blitz and hit Randy Madere on a screen for a 22-yard gain to the East St. John 36.Waguespack would find Philip Hoffman crossing in for a 11-yard gain on fourth-and-2 from the 28.

On the next play, Toby Jacob outleapt his defender in the end zone for a 17-yard touchdown. The snap on the extra point was high, leaving thescore at 10-6 with 1:39 remaining.

The Comets tried a pooch kick but Brandon Mason caught the ball for the Wildcats at the East St. John 34. Burl then broke through the line for a 22-yard gain to the Comets’ 44.

Two plays later, Smith found Williams crossing in for a 11-yard gain.

Williams was stripped of the ball with Ricky Madere recovering for the Comets at the 29-yard line with 50 seconds left.

The Comets could not get anything started, however, as two offsides penalty and sacks by Kentrell Robertson and Emmanuel Miles pushed them back to the 9-yard line as time expired.

Both defenses came up with big stops in the first half. After East St. Johnhad gone three-and-out on its first two possessions, the offense finally got rolling late in the half. Taking over at the Wildcats’ 34, BrandonAugust picked up seven yards on consecutive carries. On fourth-and-1from the 43, Smith faked a handoff and swept around the right side for a 9-yard gain.

After an incompletion, Smith got rolling, hitting Pittman for 4 yards and coming back to connect with Louis Gardner for 5 more. On fourth-and-1from the 38, Smith found Gardner over the middle for a 25-yard gain with 13 seconds left in the half.

After a holding call against the Comets, Billy Hogan came and split the uprights with a 24-yard field goal at the horn, giving the Wildcats a 3-0 halftime lead.

St. Charles Catholic had threatened on its first possession after takingover at its 37. Monica picked up a first down on third-and-4 on the 43with a 7-yard pass to Hoffman. Monica then scrambled right and wentdown the sidelines for a 35-yard pick up to the 15.

Anthony Anderson, Robert-son and Rashad Williams combined to sack Monica for a 10-yard loss, pushing the Comets back to the 28. Waguespackthen came in to attempt a 42-yard field goal but had it fall short.

St. Charles Catholic took over its next possession at midfield and drove tothe East St. John 36 behind a 10-yard pass to Hoffman. But the Wildcats’defense again held, forcing the Comets to punt.
