Dupont heads up West All-Stars

BATON ROUGE – West St. John’s Laury Dupont has been named the headcoach for the West Squad for Friday night’s Louisiana High School Coaches Association’s All-Star Football Game.

Kickoff is scheduled for 6:30 p.m. at LSU’s Tiger Stadium.Dupont led the Rams to the Class 2A state championship during the 1998 season. West St. John defeated Riverside, 28-23, in the title game to capoff a 12-3 season. The title was the first for a River Parishes schoolsince Hahnville won the Class 5A championship in 1994.

Dupont will be joined on the West Squad by two of his players, wide receiver/defensive back Pendarvis Morris and linebacker Torrian Thomas, and by lineman Jeremy Harry of St. James. They will be opposed by Lutcherdefensive tackle Andy Tramonte, Riverside defensive back Dustin Zimmer and St. Charles Catholic wide receiver John Price and offensive linemanKenny Ordeneaux of the East squad.

Morris was a first-team all-state selection at linebacker in 1998. He had137 tackles, including seven sacks, knocked down six pases, grabbed three interceptions, returning one for a touchdown.

Like Morris, Thomas has signed to play for Nicholls State this season.

Thomas came from from an injury to help lead a Rams defense that was instrumental in the state title run.

Harry was the District 10-3A Defensive MVP after helping the Wildcats to their six straight district title. The first team all-state selection made78 tackles this season, including eight sacks and 12 tackles behind the line of scrimmage. He also had 14 hurries.Tramonte helped the Bulldogs advance to the Class 3A semifinals, making honorable mention all-district honors after recording 50 solo tackles, 25 assisted tackles, three sacks and five tackles behind the line. He alsoblocked two kicks.

Zimmer was an all-District 9-2A selection after helping the Rebels to the district title and the Class 2A championship game. Zimmer interceptedfive passes, including one in the title game, and recorded 58 tackles.

Price was an all-around threat for the Comets. The all-district selectioncaught 30 passes for 493 yards and four touchdowns. He also returnedkicks for over 450 yards and three touchdowns and had two interceptions and a fumble recovery.

Ordeneaux, who has signed to play at Northeast Louisiana, was named all- district after helping the Comets to over 3,000 yards in offense this season.

Each squad consists of 35 players. Playing time will be four 12-minutequarters. All players must play at least minutes in the first half. If anyplayer does not play his full six minutes in the half, he will start the second half and play until the time requirement is fulfilled.
