NEW SARPY — A disagreement over a female led to the fatal shooting of a LaPlace man Saturday evening, authorities said.
St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office authorities said at 9 p.m. Saturday deputies responded to a shooting in the 800 block of East Terrace Street in New Sarpy, where they located Warren Sanders, 28, of LaPlace lying unresponsive in a ditch.
According to witnesses, Sidney K. Smith, 22, of East Terrace Street confronted Sanders over Sanders’ interest in Smith’s girlfriend, who lived nearby. The encounter ended with “Smith allegedly discharging an unknown type handgun multiple times at Sanders, who died at the scene,” authorities said in a release.
“I don’t know if (the two men) knew each other,” Captain Patrick Yoes said. “They certainly knew the female, but I don’t know what their relationship was.”
Yoes said Smith turned himself into the Nelson Coleman Correctional Center Sunday evening. He was booked for second degree murder. Yoes said he was unsure how many shot were fired, but added the victim was struck two times.
Authorities are not looking for any other suspects in the shooting, but Yoes said the investigation continues.
Anyone with information on the fatal shooting should contact The St. Charles Parish Sheriff’s Office by calling 911 or CRIMESTOPPERS at 1-877-903-STOP. Callers do not have to give their name nor testify and could receive up to $2,500.
