BOUTTE – The Hahnville boy’s soccer team was honored for another successful season at its annual banquet and awards presentation held Wednesday night in the school’s cafeteria.
Hahnville went 17-6-3 during the 1999-2000 season and won the District 7-I championship. The Tigers advanced to the regional playoffs before beingeliminated by eventual state champion Brother Martin on penalty kicks.
“We had a great season,” Hahnville coach Rafael de Vega said. “We exceededa lot of people’s expectations. We made a lot of progress and I’m lookingforward to continuing that next season.”The guest speaker for the event was St. Charles Parish councilman ClaytonFaucheaux. Faucheaux has been involved in soccer programs for the past 15years and coached many of the players on the current Hahnville team.
Faucheaux talked about the first years of the soccer program in the parish and how far the program has come. He recalled how the U-8 team had goneto Lafreniere and lost badly and how that team a few years later would win the Pensacola Tournament.
“You have to know where you are coming from to know where you are going,” Faucheaux said. “The tradition needs to continue and for that we need moreinvolvement from parents and in the younger leagues and I see that happening. The kids did a tremendous job. Tying the state champion in doubleovertime showed the tremendous progress St. Charles Parish has made in itssoccer program.”Senior John Keller received the scholarship award from the booster club.
Keller, along with fellow seniors Brandon Kelly and Mark Griffin, received alumni passes to future games and soccer balls signed by their teammates.
