Vogel named all-State

BATON ROUGE – Reserve Christian senior Aaron Vogel capped his basketball career for the Eagles with a Class B second-team all-district selection this week by the Louisiana Sports Writers Association.

Vogel, the Eagles’ co-captain, helped lead Reserve Christian to its second consecutive District 12-B title in 1999-2000. The Eagles advanced to theTop 28 tournament for the second consecutive season before falling to Dubach in the semifinals.

Vogel, an all-District 12-B selection, averaged 16 points per game and hit 40 percent of his shots from 3-point range. He also averaged 3.3 assistsand 2.3 rebounds per contest while grabbing 109 steals and forcing 79turnovers for the season.

Peyton Rutherford and Norman Booker of state champion Florien were named Outstanding Player and Coach of the Year, respectively. Rutherfordaveraged 20.0 points per game while Booker led the Blackcats to a 47-2record.

Joining Rutherford on the first team were Brandon Horn of Florien, James Lavergne of Lacassine, Mark Keith of Kilbourne and Fredericko Payne of Dubach. With Vogel on the second team were Hornbeck’s Jared Durr,Spearsville’s Damion Smith, Gibsland-Coleman’s Starwisky Hampton and Doyle’s Larry Burgess.

Leading the girls’ team was Outstanding Player Katie Antony of state champion Anacoco. Antony led the team to a fourth-straight title,averaging 24 points per game.

Vic Ortiz of Anacoco was the Coach of the Year after leading the team to a 43-5 record.

Joining Antony on the first team were Lela Richardson of Florien, Dana Johnson of Pitkin, Diamond Cosby of Doyline and Sissy Pickett of Martin.
