Riverside wins season opener

LAPLACE – Riverside was its usual consistent self as the Rebels opened their 2000 golf season with a five-stroke victory over Terrebonne Wednesday at Belle Terre Country Club.

Riverside (1-0) finished with a team score of 158. Terrebonne (6-1) had a163.

Brett Bergeron led the Rebels with a 2-over par 38. Michael Schoen and LeislHasbrouck added 3-over par 39s while Steve Lumanais had a 6-over 42. MikeLoiacano had a 13-over 49.

Kelley Crow tied Bergeron for top medalist honors with a 2-over 38 for the Tigers. Jon Felterman had a 3-over 39 while Rohn Rhodes had a 6-over 42.Brian Ledet added an 8-over 44 while Mark Fanguy had a 10-over 46.

Bergeron and Schoen both made pars on the par-4 first hole. On the par-4second hole, Bergeron hit a 7-iron from 150 yards out to within five feet and two-putted for a par. Schoen also two-putted for a par.After both players parred the par-3 third, #Bergeron hit his tee shot on the par-5 fourth into the left rough but recovered to make par. Schoen sent histhird shot into the green-side bunker and after having his fourth shot stay in, chipped on and rolled in a 10-foot putt for bogey.

Bergeron missed the green on the par-3 fifth and made bogey while Schoen parred the hole. Bergeron parred the par-4 sixth while Schoen made bogey.On the par-5 seventh, Bergeron pitched his third shot from 85 yards to within five feet and two-putted for par. Both Bergeron and Schoen three-putted the par-4 eighth for bogeys.

Schoen closed out the match on a high note on the par-4 ninth, hitting his second shot from the rough from 150 yards out to within six feet. Schoenholed in the putt for birdie. Bergeron also hit his second shot from 150 yardsout onto the green and after lagging his putt to within a foot, tapped in for par.

“I hit some pretty good shots but I didn’t make the putts I needed to score low,” Bergeron said. “I was spraying them off the tee so I had to make somenice recovery shots. I had to get up and down a lot but I had a couple of goodup and downs today.”Hasbrouck’s score was her best in a high school match at Belle Terre and just two off her best prep match of 37 set at Riverlands Country Club last season. She had a couple of nice recoveries including a chip out of the bunkerto within two feet on the eighth hole to save par.

“I was hitting really well of the tee today,” Hasbrouck said. “I was hitting myirons well and I was making the putts I wasn’t making in the practice round yesterday.”The match opened a season in which the Rebels will face some of the toughest teams in the state. The Rebels play Vandebilt Catholic andTerrebonne twice and have a match against perennial Class 5A power Jesuit March 15 at Belle Terre.

“We play against some good 4A and 5A teams this year,” Bergeron said.

“It should challenge us and get us ready for state. I think we have a real goodshot to win it this year.”
