How fortunate we are to live in America, the land of the free and the home of the brave. Our country was founded by God-fearing people, and many of our lawsare based on the Bible because of their strong Christian beliefs. I’ve heardpeople say that this strong structural beginning is why America is so prosperous today. Today, however, man and technology seem to be our drivingforce as opposed to God and the Bible. We constantly hear how technology ispushing us forward, but at what cost? As I sat in church on Sunday a friend of mine shared about a recent mission trip to Mexico. She told the congregation her heart was broken for these people, many of whom had nothing but a cardboard box to live in. Only minutes later, theservice was interrupted by the startling rings of various members’ cell phones and pagers. I pray that we do not become so numbed by our own prosperity thatwe allow ourselves to become prideful and overlook the horrifying poverty of much of the world around us.
Often, we read in the papers of epidemics in various countries. The word itselfis foreign to us. In other countries where doctors are few and medicine isscarce, we have both at our disposal. But when many don’t even have the barenecessities, what are we using our technology for? Well, I read an article recently that said many of our doctors are working on new genetic procedures which would allow you to dictate every feature and characteristic of your child before they were born. I always thought that God was in the business of doingthat.
I believe the worst mistake we could make is to think that technology and man’s own brilliance could be a better ladder to prosperity than God and his Biblical laws. We must run from the all too common pride of life and remember that it isHe who created us; it is only He who has blessed us with these many different gifts and talents; and without him, we are nothing.
