ESJ sweeps Wildcat Relay titles

RESERVE – There was no place like home for the East St. John track teamsFriday afternoon.

East St. John swept the team titles at the Wildcat Relays held at Joe KellerStadium, taking nine events in each of the boys’ and girls’ competitions.

The Wildcats finished with 184 points in the boys’ competition. WestJefferson was second with 93 points, followed by Destrehan with 73 and John Curtis with 63. Hammond finished fifth with 59 points with Karr followingwith 34 points and Bogalusa with seven.

In the girls’ competition, the Lady Cats out-distanced the field with 168 points. West Jefferson was second with 74 points with Hammond in thirdwith 49 points. Karr had 48 points, followed by Lutcher with 44, Hahnvillewith 42 and Destrehan with 30. Bogalusa had 15 points.Chris Bush led the Wildcats in the boys’ competition. Bush captured the longjump with a jump of 22 feet, five inches, and the triple jump with an effort of 46-1. Jonathan Miles finished second in both events with jumps of 20-4 and41-5, respectively. Bush also placed second in the javelin with a throw of159-5.

Stewart took first in the discus with a throw of 123-7. Chad Henry wassecond in the high jump with a leap of 5-10. Destrehan’s Dequincy Noblecleared the bar at 6-2 to take first.

In the track events, East St. John took first in the 800-meter relay in a timeof 1:27.8. The Wildcats also won the 400-meter relay in 42.5 seconds.Brandon Johnson was first in the 110-meter hurdles, crossing the line in 15.65 seconds.Teammate Cornell Watkins placed first in the 100 meters in 10.75 secondswhile Michael Ridley was first in the 400 in 51.1 seconds. Watkins also tooksecond in the 200 meters with teammate Raynell Joseph taking the event.

Joseph also took third in the 100. Clifford Durio was second in the 800meters in 2:12.4.Destrehan’s Jeremy Parquet placed second in the shot put with a throw of 44-11.

In the girls’ competition, Yoshiko Taylor won three events for the Lady Cats.

Taylor won the initial pole vault competition in the meet, clearing the bar at 5-0. Taylor also placed first in the 1600 meters in 5:56.8 and in the 3200 in13:15 and was named the meet’s outstanding field performer.

Lakia Williams won the shot put with a throw of 35-7 and was second in the discus with an effort of 92-1.75. Teammate Pam Winston was first in thediscus with a best throw of 108-10. And Melissa Ledet had an event-leadingjump of 32-8 in the triple jump, narrowly beating out Hahnville’s Toyelle Rickson who had a jump of 32-7.

In the track events, Daniel Washington crossed the line first in the 100 meter hurdles in 17.1 Anastasia Deloney was first in the 200 meters in26.53. East St. John won the 400-meter relay with a time of 49.65 and wassecond in the 800 in 1:46.0.Lutcher’s Tiffany Griffin was first in the javelin with a throw of 116-11. EastSt. John’s Courtney Drayton was second with her throw of 105-5 andDestrehan’s Diamonique Pollard third with a throw of 99-10. Griffin was alsothird in the long jump.
