The fifth Commandment in the Bible says, “Honor your father and mother.” A lotof times teen-agers, including myself, seem to think we are the one exception to this rule. To honor means to respect highly.Much to my dismay, the Bible makes no exceptions. In fact, it says that to thosewho dishonor their parents, years will be taken away from their lives. Manytimes, as young people, we despise the authority God has placed us under; we fail to realize that a blessing it really is.

I believe God has intended for our earthly relationships with our parents to help us better understand our relationship with our heavenly Father. If we cannotsubmit to our earthly father, who we can see, how can we say that we submit to a heavenly Father who is unseen? I must admit that I have been guilty of not wanting to submit.

Who wants to submit? It is such a pride killer, especially for teen-agers. Wefail to realize that our parents’ rules are not meant to be malicious. They loveus very much, and God put them in our lives for a reason. Obviously, He thoughtthey would be the best people for you to be in submission to.

To submit means to “cease resistance.” Therefore, we are in no way, shape orform justified by doing anything that resists our parents’ authority. Forexample, talking back or questioning every little thing our parents tell us is not showing them respect. Personally, sometimes I need God to shut my mouth forme; after all, I wouldn’t dare speak to my heavenly Father that way.

So, I encourage you to respect your parents and realize what a blessing they really are. I know I love mine very much. Oh, and please keep me in your prayers, because I’m sure that any and every time I come close to questioning their authority, they will be reminding me of this article I wrote.
