AOL defeats St. Peter’s in Catholic League opener

LAPLACE – Mike Pecoraro had a game-high 11 points as Ascension of Our Lord opened River Parishes Catholic League play with a 48-6 victory over St. Peter’s Thursday night at St. Charles Catholic High School.Jimmy Mustian contributed seven points and Derrick Holmes had six for the Crusaders. Jeremiah Jones led St. Peter’s with four points whileSteven Richard chipped in with two points.

Ascension of Our Lord never trailed, scoring off the opening tip as Larry Jones passed ahead to Kraig Cason. Richard pulled St. Peter’s to within 3-2by banking in a jumper from the right side but Daniel LeBlanc answered for the Crusaders with a jumper in the lane. Mustian added a 3-pointer fromthe right wing and Jones drove in for a layup, making it 10-2 at the end of the first quarter.

Pecoraro and Cason opened the second quarter by grabbing steals and taking them in to make it 14-2. After Dwight Jackson banked in a jumper,Johnson drove in to make it 16-4 with 2:15 left in the half. Holmes cameback with a put back after a steal by Jackson to build the lead to 18-4 at the half.

The Crusaders continued to extend the lead in the third quarter. Pecoraroscored on a jumper on the right baseline and two put backs after steals by Jones and Ryan Guillot and James Arruebarrena took in a steal to make it 30-4. After Johnson hit the first of two free throws, Arruebarrena hit ajumper to make it 32-5 after three quarters.

Joel Emerson hit a jumper in the lane and Mustian scored off a steal by Jackson and on a jumper from the right wing early in the final quarter.

After Johnson added another free throw for St. Peter’s, Jackson, ChrisCottone and Holmes hit jumpers to conclude the scoring.
