SCC toasts athletes

LAPLACE – St. Charles Catholic took a look back at the 1999-2000 athleticyear at its annual All-Sports Banquet Saturday, May 6, in the Comet gym.

The ceremony honored a year in which the boys’ swim team placed second in the state in Class 3A and the boys’ tennis team won the regional championship. St. Charles Catholic also won district championships involleyball, boys’ soccer and tennis. The volleyball, girls’ basketball, baseballand softball teams made the state playoffs with the volleyball team making a third straight appearance in the semifinals.

The Mr. And Miss Comet Awards were presented by last year’s recipients,John Price and Shannon Dolive. The award honors the school’s top seniormale and female athlete.

Adam Gros received the Mr. Comet Award. Gros was a four-year letterman infour sports – football, swimming, basketball and golf. This season, he was anall-district and all-state selection in the 100 breaststroke in swimming. Groswas also a member of the state champion 200 medley relay team and was a member of the Class 3A state runner-up swim team. In addition, he was astate qualifier in golf.

Marci Martin was honored with the Miss Comet Award. Martin was a four yearletterman in three sports – volleyball, basketball and softball. This year, shewas an all-district selection in both volleyball and softball. In 1998, she wasan all-state selection in softball after pitching the Lady Comets to the Class 2A state championship.

Three slide shows in memory of the late Francis Luminais were presented.

The first two took a look back at the year while the third was in honor of the seniors.

All athletes who participated in sports this past school year were recognized with special recognition going to those athletes who received postseason honors.

Those receiving special honors were: Swimming (boys): Dustin Braud – state runner-up, state champion 200 medley relay, all-district, all-state 50 freestyle; Adam Gros – state runner- up, state champion 200 medley relay, all-district, all-state 100 breaststroke; Robbie Paydo – state runner-up, state champion 200 medley relay, all-district, all-state 100 backstroke; Shannon Graver – state runner- up, state champion 200 medley relay; James Cupit – state runner-up, state qualifier; Brett Deroche – state runner-up, state qualifier; John Howard – state runner-up, state qualifier; Cory Exterstein – state runner-up, state qualifier; Chris Arcuri – state runner-up, state qualifier; Josh Ford – state runner-up, state qualifier.

Swimming (girls): Abby Howard – state qualifier; Liz Dufresne – state qualifier; Mary Guillot – state qualifier; Melissa Schlindwein – state qualifier; Jessica Eschette – state qualifier; Whitney Torres – state qualifier; Candy Turner – state qualifier; Kelly Cupit – state qualifier.

Football: Jason Waguespack – all-district; Elinus Noel – all-district; Phillip Hoffman – all-district; Matt Fisse – all-district; John Mitchell – all-district; Chris Martin – all-district; Nicholas Monica – all-district; Toby Jacob – all- district; Jonathon Hymel – all-district.

Cross country: Nicole Guarino – all-district; Andre Ory – all-district, district champion; Chris Arcuri – all-district.

Volleyball: Cristin Clement – all-district; Marci Martin – all-district; Nicole Scontrino – all-district, district MVP; coach Michelle Dearmitt – District 9-3A Coach of the Year.

Boys’ basketball: Daress Nicholas – second team all-district.

Girls basketball: Liz Dufresne – second team all-district.

Soccer: Allan Doubleday – all-district; Justin Chauvin – all-district.

Softball: Cristin Clement – all-district, first team; Marci Martin – all-district, first team; Courtney Vicknair – all-district, first team; Jessie Zeringue – all- district, District 9-3A MVP; Sarah Weber, all-district, second team.

Baseball: Nicholas Monica – all-district, first team; Jason LaPorte, all- district, first team; Mike Mustian, all-district, first team; Dustin Braud, all- district, second team; Jeremy Triche, all-district, second team; Toby Jacob, all-district, second team; Jason Waguespack, all-district, second team; Ricky Madere, all-district, second team; Randy Madere, all-district, second team.

Track (boys): Andre Ory – all-district, all-region 3,200-meter run.

Track (girls): Cristin Clement – all-district, all-region long jump.

Golf: Adam Gros – state qualifier.

Tennis: Scott Froehlich – all-district, regional champion; Jared Lorio, regional runner-up; Kip Verbeek – regional runner-up.
