LHSAA awards softball tournament to Sulphur

ST. FRANCISVILLE – Local softball fans planning to attend the Louisiana HighSchool Athleic Association State Softball Tournament next year will have to adjust their travel plans.
The LHSAA executive committee voted to award Sulphur the tournament at its summer meetings Thursday at the Bluffs on Thompson Creek. Alexandriahad hosted the tournament at its Youth Softball Complex for over a decade.
Sulphur got the bid after trying unsuccessfully the last four years, receiving 14 of the 15 votes. Alexandria received the only other vote.Hahnville and Lutcher both made the state tournament in Alexandria this past season. Riverside and St. Charles Catholic have also made it in recentyears.
The committee also voted to award the Sweet 16 girls’ basketball tournament to Hammond. Monroe had hosted the tournament the past fouryears at Fant-Ewing Coliseum. The 2001 Sweet 16 is scheduled for theUniversity Center on the Southeastern Louisiana University campus Feb. 26to March 3. Hammond received nine of the 15 votes. Monroe received threevotes and Ruston two.
The committee also dealt with many issues surrounding the LEAP test. Aproposal was approved that will male students ineligible for one semester if they transfer to another school system after failing the test. There hadbeen a concern that students who failed the test would transfer to private schools where the test is not mandatory and be immediately eligible.
