LAPLACE – Sitting back in his chair in his office Monday morning, St.

Charles Catholic tennis coach Jeff Montz got a chance to reflect back on the 2000 season.

Montz has been busy over the last couple of months, what with the season winding down, the final weeks of the school year and of course, his wedding at the beginning of May.

Montz had a lot to look back on – a co-regional championship by the boys’ team, a regional title in singles by Scott Froehlich, a runner-up finish in regionals by the doubles team of Jared Lorio and Kip Verbeek and a quarterfinal appearance by the girls’ doubles team of Nicole Scontrino and Liz Dufresne. That after a second-place finish by the boys in the RiverParishes Tennis League.

The boys’ team finished behind E.D. White in league action with a 10-2record. Froehlich, who had moved up to the No. 1 position toward the end ofthe season, won his first two matches in the Region III Tournament at the City Park Tennis Courts in New Orleans handily, losing just three points.

In the finals, Froehlich faced Robichaux of E.D. White whom had defeatedhim in the final match of the season. Froehlich got even this time, outlasting Robichaux 2-6, 7-6 (7-5 in the tiebreaker) and 7-6 (7-3).

Robichaux opened his matches with a 6-0, 6-4 victory over the Comets’ Jim Guidry in the first round.

Froehlich advanced to the Class 3A state tournament, also at City Park, but lost his first match.

The team of Verbeek and Lorio was the Comets’ No. 1 doubles squad formuch of the season. After receiving a first-round bye, Verbeek and Loriowon their second match to set up a semifinal matchup against teammates Steven Ramirez and Mike Sobilo. Verbeek and Lorio won a tight match, 7-5,3-6, 6-3, to advance to the finals. There, the two lost to Steve Jones andJimmy Jones of E.D. White, 6-4, 6-1.Ramirez and Sobilo, which had opened the tournament with two wins, would drop a qualifying match later that day. Michael Rollo and DavidBryan won their first match by forfeit but lost in the second round to the Jones of E.D. White.Verbeek and Lorio advanced to the state tournament but were defeated in the first round.

The team of Scontrino and Dufresne won its first match at regionals before falling in the quarterfinals. Erin Vicknair and Michelle Bedoya alsowon their first matches before falling in the second round. The team ofCheria Scaffidi and Amanda Flores fell in the first round.

In singles play, Kate Kliebert won her first match but fell in the second round. Vinita Oberoi also won her first match before falling in her second. The girls tied for third in the regionals with Lutcher with four points.

Sacred Heart won it with 12 points, followed by E.D. White with eight. The boys tied E.D. White for the regional title with 10 points apiece. E.D.White had defeated the Comets twice during league play.

“We felt good about tying them in regionals after losing to them in the league,” Montz said. “It showed the improvement we had made.”Being my first year running the tennis program, it was very enjoyable.

The kids worked hard to improve. Hopefully they set the table for moregood seasons to come.”
