Local players have hand in upsets

LAPLACE – Two River Parishes athletes had a hand in Northwestern State’s 24-17 upset of fifth-ranked Troy State last Saturday.
Germond Williams, a Destrehan graduate, had a hand in the Demons’ goal- line stand late in the game. Williams helped tackle Troy State’s LeBarron Black atthe Demons’ 2-yard line with less than three minutes to play. QuarterbackBrock Nutter was stopped short on fourth down to preserve the win.
East St. John alum T.J. Sutherland had a team-high four catches for 100yards in the win. Sutherland caught a 36-yard pass from Ben Beach to givethe Demons a 17-10 lead with six minutes left in the third quarter.
Another former Destrehan defender played a part in an upset Saturday.
Edward Reed had an interception in Miami (Fla.)’s 27-24 victory over No. 1-Ranked Florida State. It was the second of the season for the junior safety.East St. John graduate Thomas Pittman had a big game in Florida’s 41-9victory over LSU. Pittman had four tackles, including one for a loss, broke uptwo passes and recorded a sack.
St. Charles Catholic alum Casey Roussel punted three times for a 46.7 yardaverage with a long of 51 in Tulane’s 38-37 win at Louisiana-Lafayette.
Roydell Williams of East St. John caught one pass for seven yards. ChrisBush, Williams’ teammate at East St. John, is being redshirted this season bythe Green Wave.
Local fans will get to see another East St. John graduate in action thisSaturday when Southern Mississippi defensive lineman DeQuincy Scott and the Golden Eagles play Tulane in the Superdome at 11 a.m. The game is beingtelevised by Fox Sports Southwest. Also on the Southern Miss roster isDestrehan grad Jeremy Parquet, Hahnville’s Karon Champagne and Lutcher’s Kenneth Johnson.
Scott had an interception in the Golden Eagles’ 41-7 win over South Florida last week. Johnson caught two passes for nine yards, ran three times for 18yards and returned four ounts for another 29 yards. For the season, thetrue freshman has caught five passes for 33 yards and returned seven punts for 100 yards, a 14.29 yard average.East St. John’s Kerry Watkins had two catches for 21 yards in GeorgiaTech’s 42-28 win at North Carolina two weeks ago. Greg Gathers, anotherEast St. John alum, had an interception in the game, returning it 21 yards.
