Destrehan cruises past Douglass

DESTREHAN – The Douglass Bobcats were nibbled down to a nub, asDestrehan’s Fighting Wildcats rolled up a 49-6 score Friday. For most ofthe first half, Douglass never saw Wildcat territory.

The Destrehan kickoff started the Bobcats at their own 34, and theyproceeded to move back to their own 21 and punted to their own 29, whereDestrehan took their first possession.

Two plays later, Randy Roth connected with Fred Smith for a 27-yardtouchdown pass with 8:52 remaining on the first quarter clock. The point-after kick by Jonathan Scifres made it 7-0.

Douglass’s next possession ended in a giveaway fumble two minutes laterat the Bobcat 28, where Jason Wordlaw recovered for the Wildcats. On thenext play Dechad Ward rolled out for the next touchdown with 6:53remaining in the first quarter. Again, the PAT was good and the Wildcatsedged out to a 14-0 lead.

The Bobcats’ next possession after accepting the kickoff began the driveat their own 23 and ended at their own 29. The punt was bobbled andDestrehan took possession at the Douglass 25-yard line with 2:29remaining in the first quarter. A DHS fumble next resulted in a 20-yardloss of territory, where Craig Codina retained the ball for the Wildcats.

Three plays later, Destrehan punted.

Again, Douglass gained little and punted back to the Destrehan 27-yardline as the second quarter began. Roth nailed David Schexnaydre, whoscrambled to the Bobcat 16-yard line. Three plays later, Dechad Wardstepped over from one yard out to edge the scoreboard, with the PAT, to21-0 and 10:23 remaining in the first half.

The next four minutes of official play was eaten up by Douglass’s drivefrom their own 39-yard line to the Wildcat 44, where Destrehan took overon downs.

Assisted by a personal foul call against the Bobcats, the Wildcats powereddown to the Dougass 4-yard line. From there, Roth connected with LandonTurner for the touchdown, which made the tally 28-0 with 3:33 remainingin the first half.

Douglass kicked off to open the second half, booting the ball to theWildcat 34-yard line. Five plays later, with Roth’s arm leading the waywith connections to Fred Smith, Richard Jones and Craig Eugene, Destrehanfound themselves four plays later at the Bobcat 21-yard line.

Fred Smith then snared another TD pass with 9:39 remaining in the thirdquarter to boost Destrehan to a commanding 35-0 lead.

The Bobcats launched their next drive after receiving the kickoff fromtheir own 29-yard line. However, their effort again failed, this time witha fumble recovered by Destrehan at the Douglass 8-yard stripe with 7:28remaining in the third quarter.

Three plays later, Roth connected with Robert Brown for the touchdown,placing Destrehan with a 42-0 lead with 6:02 remaining in the thirdperiod.

By this time, a light drizzle had begun, which slowly increased throughoutthe remainder of the game, keeping the ball out of the air for both teams.

Douglass’s next possession ended with a punt after a drive of minus-15yards to their own 5-yard line. The punt, almost straight up and straightdown, placed the Wildcats at the Bobcat 15-yard line with 2:41 remainingin the third.

Five leisurely plays later, Daniel Louquet darted in from five yards out tobump the tally up to 49-0, joined by Jimmy Coupel’s PAT.

The final quarter was almost all Douglass’s possession. Their initialeight-yard drive ended in a punt. Destrehan’s backup squad soon puntedback to the visiting team’s 31-yard line.

From that point, Douglass’s scoring drive began, a 10-play drivehighlighted by a 29-yard sweep left to the Destrehan 8-yard line byRussell Magee.

Three plays later, Joseph Coleman scored from inches, placing the Bobcatson the board at last, with 20 seconds remaining in the game. Their two-point conversion pass play failed, and Destrehan strolled to a 49-6victory.

This Friday, the Fighting Wildcats will host Ponchatoula.
