Serving, defense pace Riverside’s win over SCC

RESERVE – Wednesday’s match between Riverside and St. Charles Catholicwas a throw back to the old District 9-2A days when the teamsconsistently went three games to decide the outcome.
Riverside used nearly flawless serving and defense in defeating the LadyComets, 15-12, 10-15, 15-10, breaking a four-game win streak by St.
Charles Catholic in the series.
Riverside improved to 3-0 on the season while St. Charles Catholic fell to2-5.
Riverside jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the final game behind a kill by AmyHymel and an ace by Cassie St. Amant. St. Charles Catholic got its firstpoint on an ace by Katie Arcuri but Riverside answered on its ensuingserve with an ace by Adrienne Albares to take a 6-1 lead.
A kill by Amanda Helm made it 6-2 before Riverside took off on a 6-0 run.
St. Amant dinked a shot over, then delivered a kill down the left baselinefor a 2-2 lead. Arcuri broke the serve with a dink and the Lady Cometsrallied with four straight unanswered points behind a kill by Heather Heltzand three Riverside errors. An ace by Arcuri a serve later made it 12-7.
After an ace by Albares gave Riverside a 13-7 lead, St. Charles Catholicbroke consecutive serves and pulled to within three on two aces by Heltzand a kill into the left corner by Sarah Weber. But a service error regainedpossession for Riverside and the Lady Rebels closed out the match with anace by Kelly Louque and a block by Hymel.
“We got out of it exactly what we wanted to get,” Riverside coach ToniMiano said. “The girls were very impressive offensively and did everythingwe wanted them to do. Our serves were wonderful. We’ve been 98 percenton our serves and that definitely helped us in the game. We played ourdefense. We held our positions and they hit it right at us.”For St. Charles Catholic, it was a case of too many unforced errors.
“We forced them by ourselves,” Lady Comets coach Michelle Dearmitt said.
“We couldn’t get the job done on our side.”
The first game was a similar story to the third game. The Lady Rebelsjumped out to a 4-1 lead behind four St. Charles Catholic errors. The LadyComets rallied to take an 8-6 lead behind an ace by Laurie Weimar and ablock and a kill by Weber.
Riverside came right back with a 6-0 run. Heidi Richard got the runstarted with an ace and added another one two serves later. A dink byHymel and two error by the Lady Comets made it 12-8.
The Lady Rebels pulled to within game point on two unforced errors by theLady Comets. St. Charles Catholic then held off four straight serves,pulling to within 14-12. A block by Monica Arcuri and an ace by KatieArcuri made it 14-11. A serve later, Monica Arcuri served another ace tobring the Lady Comets to within one. Louque broke the serve and came backwith two blocks with Richard serving to give the Lady Rebels the game.
St. Charles Catholic pulled out to an 8-0 lead on its second serve of thesecond match. Katie Arcuri had a block, Nikki Michel a kill and Helmconsecutive aces before Riverside called a timeout with the score 5-1.
Arcuri added a kill and Helm delivered another ace to make it 7-1.
After Riverside pulled to within five behind a kill by Richard, MonicaArcuri served two aces to build the lead back to 11-3. A kill by MonicaArcuri three serves later gave the Lady Comets a 13-4 lead.
Riverside came back with a 6-0 run. A block by Richard and a kill byLouque made it 13-7. Louque delivered another kill to bring the LadyRebels to within three. But after a St. Charles Catholic timeout, Weberbroke the serve with a dig and Katie Arcuri delivered an ace to make it14-10. A lift against the Lady Rebels gave the Lady Comets the gamewinner.
St. Amant had a game-high 10 kills for Riverside. Albares and Richard eachhad two aces for the Lady Rebels. Richard was also named the Lady Rebels’top defender.
Katie Arcuri led St. Charles Catholic with five kills and five aces. MonicaArcuri also had five kills. Weber was the Lady Comets’ top defender.
St. Charles Catholic played in the H.L. Bourgeois at the end of the week,falling to Ursuline and Bourgeois in its first two games. Riverside isplaying in the Southeastern Louisiana University Tournament today.
