(Staff Photo by Michael Kiral) METAIRIE – Wednesday’s Hahnville-Rummel District I regional playoff game had all the intensity of last year’s bi-district thriller. It was just decided a lot sooner. Shawn Mire’s penalty kick at the 24-minute mark of the second half gave the Tigers a 1-0 victory and advanced them to the quarterfinal round. Hahnville, which defeated the Raiders, 1-0, last year in double overtime, continues its deja vu tour in the quarterfinals at Brother Martin. The Crusaders eliminated the Tigers in the regionals last season with a 3-2 shootout victory. Hahnville enters that game with a 24-6 record. Brother Martin (27-5-2) advanced after defeating St. Amant, 1-0, Wednesday. Rummel finished its season at 15-5-3. “We knew from the start it was going to be a rough game,” Hahnville head coach Rafael de Vega said. “It was a continuation from last year. We knew it was going to be a rough, physical game. We told the players at the half, in the first 25-30 minutes they (Rummel) threw everything at us they had. If we got one in, we were going to win the game.” Hahnville got that opportunity at the 24-minute mark when Travis Webre was fouled in the box after a throw in by Michael Fedrick. Mire took the shot and angled it into the right side of the net past diving goal keeper Brad Allen. Hahnville kept up the pressure as Jeff Kerlec took a pass on the right side and crossed a shot that went just wide left. Three minutes later, Brad Guillory chipped in a shot to Garrick Gomez whose shot from the right side was punched over the net by Allen. Rummel got an opportunity to tie the game in extra time as Jeff Reynolds chipped in a direct kick that was grabbed by a leaping Matt Cummins in goal. Then with time running down, Cummins again went up to grab a chip in by Jeff Fritcher. Rummel controlled the early part of the first half, getting the first chance as Cory Mahl’s shot from the right side sailed high. Hahnville answered with a shot by Gomez from behind the box that sailed wide right. Rummel’s Jonathan Coates took a pass ahead of the Hahnville defense and took a shot from the right side that missed wide left at the nine-minute mark. Reynolds then sent in a free kick that was headed wide by Sean Moore. At the 17-minute mark, Mire took a crossing pass from Adam Bordelon on the right side but had his shot grabbed by Allen. Seven minutes later, Cummins grabbed a kick from near midfield by Reynolds. Bordelon followed a minute later with a kick from behind the box that was grabbed by Allen. Rummel had its best chance to get on the scoreboard at the 30-minute mark as Mahl centered a pass to Coates whose shot from in front was deflected wide by Bordelon. Hahnville had a chance in the final minute when Tim Sirmon sent in a free kick to Webre whose header went wide right. “In the first half, we started out kind of slow because of them putting a lot of pressure on us,” de Vega said. “We almost had to resort to just putting deep balls in. There was not much time to do anything.” The Tigers nearly broke the scoreless string at the 10-minute mark of the second half when Guillory took a crossing pass from Webre on the left side but had his shot slice just wide.
