LUTCHER – As with most high school baseball teams, different positions throughout the team have a different depth of players. The Lutcher Bulldogs are no different this season. On the mound and in the outfield are two areas where the Bulldogs are the most flexible. The Bulldogs have about seven players capable of switching positions and taking to the mound for a few innings. With 17 players on the roster, some guys from the bench even have the ability to step up if needed.
Currently, the Bulldogs are on a four-game win streak, with their first district game Thursday versus E.D. White. District games for most other baseball teams opened yesterday. Last season, the Bulldogs finished in a solid second to E.D. White, with a 9-3 district record and a 23-10 overall record.
“The time of the season we’ve been getting ready for is here now,” said Bulldogs’ coach Scott Tribble. “Now we can settle down and start using our best pitchers more.”
Tribble said two of last season’s starting pitchers graduated last season and he is looking to Ryan St. Jermain and T.J. Bourgeois to lead from the mound. Bourgeois is currently recovering from his knee injury, which he suffered while on the field for the Bulldogs’ football team.
“We have number of guys holding their roles and that’s what it’s going to take,” continued Tribble. “We played a three-game series and had only two errors. We’re looking to carry that kind of play into district, and take it one game at a time. It’s a long season and if we look too far ahead, we might miss something close.”
The Bulldogs were “on the fence” with an even 3-3 record before their recent winning streak, which now has them at 7-3. Tribble said the team had to decide which way they wanted to fall, then played some of their best baseball to put them above .500.
