VACHERIE – Before an electric crowd almost encircling the court, the St. James Wildcats picked up their aggressive pace to take a 93-72 win over the Lutcher Bulldogs.

Wildcats’ coach Lionell Ezidore said “it’s not too often” his team scores 93 points in a game, but they have done it for back-to-back wins, with the St. Charles Catholic Comets as their prior victim.

The Wildcats pounced early with a 13-0 run and outscored the visiting Bulldogs 21-12 after eight minutes.

The deficit seemed to be what Lutcher needed and provided their fire through the second quarter. Led by Gerren Hansley, who had 19 points, the Bulldogs turned the table on St. James, forcing odd shots and stealing the ball away for runs down the court and lay ups.

The renewed aggression caused the Wildcats to handle the ball with uncertainty and raise their score to within one point, 38-37.

Lutcher’s scoring frenzy ended at the first half buzzer.

At halftime, Ezidore told his players not to relax and respect all teams. He said they had to get out, play better ball and concentrate on the game.

“We got complacent and Lutcher played hard and did a real good job,” Ezidore added.

The Wildcats concentrated on their game and scored 27 third quarter points. Ezidore said his team got back to playing their usual style. Wildcat Eeron Hickerson led the team’s spurt, which turned into a full second-quarter drive. Ezidore said his team applied its fierce defensive pressure and rebounding, which resulted in 14 Lutcher points.

The Bulldogs scored another 21 points in the last quarter, but it was not enough to overcome the Wildcats’ momentum and 28 points.

The Bulldogs’ Ellis Hughes ended the night with 18 points and his teammate Ashlon Albert scored the team’s second highest with 13 points.

The Wildcats had their second game where four players pulled in double digit scores. Derrick Jones led with 29 points, while LeVar Joseph had 27, Hickerson had 14 and Desi Steib had 10.

The Wildcats travel to take on the Reserve Christian Eagles Monday night.
