It was the 10th annual fund raiser for St. John’s Sheriff Wayne Jones and it produced quite a turnout. This golf and tennis tourney took place at the Belle Terre Country Club with about 325 golfers participating and with the ladies tennis participation being filled to capacity. Sheriff Jones also claimed that there were 200 business sponsors contributing to the success of the event. Perfect weather also was a great contributor.

The ladies of the tennis courts completed their tournament action earlier in the afternoon while the golfers needed much more time to complete their competition.

Winners in the tennis “A” Division, first, second and third, respectively, were Carla Catalano and Pam Smith of Destrehan; Karen Olsson of Destrehan and Diane Tatje of LaPlace; and Meg Spatz of Norco and Cheryl Schoen of LaPlace. Natalie Robottom and Leona Fletcher of LaPlace finished first in the “B” Division with Rhonda Rutledge and Natalie Tatje second and Jo Ann Jones and Beth Roussel, third.

Jamie Jones and Kristin Falterman are St. Charles Catholic tennis players and Jamie was celebrating her 15th birthday at her dad’s fundraiser. They created interest when the team first had to play Kristin’s mom and partner, Jo Ann Falterman and Janis Ducote as well as Jamie’s mom, Jo Ann and partner Beth Roussel.

The most interest created, however, was the awarding of door prizes by Sheriff Jones to lucky players and, as usual, the prizes were quite nice and desirable. For most, it was another fun tournament which was presided over by Belle Terre Tennis Professional, Leif Olsson.

In the golf competition, the morning round was won by the team from Hydrochem with players Timmy Ragan, Bob Durham, Brian Beadle and Andy Collier and the afternoon round winners were Jim Davies, Matt Palmer and Joe McNiel.

Food and drinks were provided for all the participants throughout the day with an after-tournament party held in the Belle Terre Clubhouse in the evening.

Each year Sheriff Jones donates $1,000 of raised campaign funds to a local charity and this year St. John’s local Relay for Life organization, which raises funds for finding a cure for cancer, is the recipient.
