About the worst thing that happened to the St. Charles Catholic baseball team Saturday afternoon was that the game had to be delayed because a swarm of bees had been hovering above third base. Other than that, the Comets pounded out 10 runs on 10 hits in a 10-0 wipeout of Dunham at Comet Field.
The game was called in the sixth inning because of the 10-run mercy rule.
The Comets pitching combination of Jeremy Catoire and Jesse Martin only gave up one hit.
SCC scored nine of the 10 runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth inning. Leading 2-0, the Comets put four runs on the board in the fifth to give them a comfortable 6-0 lead. Billie Poche led off the inning with a walk and advanced to second on a steal. He then advanced to third on a fielders choice and scored on a Dunham error. A double from Matt Heltz plated Martin, who reached first base on an error. Martin’s run made the score 4-0 Comets.
James Callahan was responsible for the third run of the inning. His base hit scored Heltz from second.
The final run of the inning came on two consecutive wild pitches thrown from Dunham’s Brian Grier.
Another four runs in the bottom of the sixth gave the Comets a commanding lead. A lead-off walk to Billie Poche led to him advancing to second and third base on a walk and a wild pitch. He then crossed home when Jeremy Poche lifted a sacrifice fly. Likewise, Adam Millet scored on a sacrifice fly in the sixth inning. Back-to-back singles by David Rollo and Casey Robottom scored Heltz and Callahan.
Catoire picked up the victory for St. Charles Catholic.
Early on, both teams pitchers threw well. During three innings, Catoire struck out seven and only walked one.
With both SCC and Dunham going scoreless in the first inning, the Comets put their first run on the board in the bottom of the second. A lead-off double by Jeremy Poche led to a single from Heltz, which put runners in scoring position with no out. A sacrifice by Catoire scored Poche from third base.
After Catoire retired the side in the top of the third, the Comets added another run to lead. All it took was one swing of the bat from Jesse Martin.
His solo homerun gave the Comets a 2-0 cushion.
Martin came in relief of Catoire in the fourth inning and struck out four while walking none.
St. Charles Catholic will next play John Curtis tommorow afternoon at Comet Field.
Heltz was the top hitter for the Comets, going 2-3.
