BOUTTE – All it took was one swing of the back to change the complexion of the game between Destrehan and Hahnville on Wednesday afternoon. Leading 7-5 in the top of the sixth, Destrehan’s Brandon Stevens nailed a three-run homer to give the Wildcats a comfortable 10-5 lead, which eventually led to an 11-5 victory for Destrehan.

The Wildcats pounded out 13 hits off of Hahnville pitchers. Andrew Lassere picked up the victory for Destrehan, while Jordan Brown took the loss for the Tigers.

Things were even through the first three innings.

In the top of the first, Destrehan jumped out to a 1-0 lead when Trey Simon doubled home pitcher Beau Jones, who had reached base on a walk. That would be the lone run in the inning for Destrehan as Brown went on to strike out the next two hitters.

The bottom of the first saw the Tigers get on the scoreboard. A lead-off walk to Ryne Madere led to him scoring on a double by cleanup hitter Aramie Melancon.

After both teams went scoreless in the second inning, each team scored a run in the third inning.

The top of the third saw Destrehan, the 2003 5A state-runner up, threaten with one out. Two straight singles led to runners in scoring position. With Tyrone Wethers on second and Jones on first, Simon nailed a single for his second RBI of the game. This gave DHS a 2-1 lead.

In the bottom of the third, Hahnville got a run back to tie the game 2-2. Designated hitter John Gros led off the inning with a single and rapidly advanced to third on a passed ball and a balk. Jones would then walk three of the next four Hahnville batters to force in a run.

Things appeared to be in control for HHS in the bottom of the fourth. The Tigers scored three runs on four hits. Jordan Stephany led off the inning with an inside- the- park home run for the innings first run. With runners on first and second, Madere slammed a double to left, scoring Charlie Harrell and Madere.

Going into the top of the fifth, Hahnville led 5-2.

In the top of the fifth, Destrehan sent nine batters to the plate and came up with five runs on four hits. In addition, Destrehan did not score more than one run during each at bat.

Lassere came in relief of Jones in the fourth inning and did not allow a run in the fifth, sixth and seventh innings.

Top hitters for Destrehan were Simon (3-3, 2RBI’s) and Jones (2-3).

For HHS, Melancon went 2-4.

Destrehan improved to 13-1 (1-0).
