Press Release

Napoleonville – Democrat Charlie Melancon has announced his bid for the 3rd Congressional District of Louisiana.

The former president of the American Sugar Cane League and former State Representative, said his campaign will be all about Louisiana and its people. “Our campaign for Congress will be about jobs for Louisianans; delivering a Medicare prescription drug benefit that truly benefits all Louisiana seniors; and working in Congress to protect the coastline of Louisiana for future generations,” he said.

In February, Melancon announced the formation of an exploratory committee, and added that the success of that committee, coupled with the encouragement from people across the district, prompted him to run for the Third Congressional seat left open by the retirement of Congressman Billy Tauzin.

Melancon was elected to the state legislature in 1987 and served until 1993, when he took over the job with the Sugar Cane League.

He was born in Napoleonville, graduated from Assumption High School and the University of Southwestern Louisiana with a degree in Agricultural Business.

He is a member of the UL-Lafayette Alumni Association, Ducks Unlimited, Kappa Sigma Alumni Association, Louisiana and Assumption Farm Bureaus, and Friends of Christ Church.
