One of the most common asked questions regarding domestic violence is: Why do victims stay in abusive relationships? A common mistake in understanding domestic violence is blaming the victim. The assumption is by changing the victim the abuse will stop.

The questions that should be asked are: Why do batterers abuse their partners? Why do men beat women? Whose holding batterers accountable for their abuse? What is the community’s response to domestic violence? What is my response to domestic violence? The focus should be on the perpetrator who has made a decision to be abusive. When focusing on the victim, the perpetrator is left unaccountable to himself as well as to society. These responses in itself cause victims to remain in abusive relationships.

It is assumed that if victims of abuse really wanted to leave they could just leave.
