LAPLACE – A nail-biter finish granted St. Charles Catholic’s Comets a share of the district title in a 31-28 thriller Friday night against E.D. White.

St. Charles received the opening kickoff at their own 32 and drove in seven plays to Tyrell Fenroy’s 23-yard touchdown run with 9:20 on the first quarter clock. Ben Sellars booted the PAT for the 7-0 score.

However, the E.D. White Cardinals were to match the Comets, point for point all game. In their first possession, the Cardinals started at their own 20 and drove 10 plays to their opening touchdown.

This was a 5-yard scramble by Daniel Naul, with 4:44 on the first quarter clock. The PAT by Jeremy Robichaux knotted the score at 7-7.

St. Charles rebounded with another score, accepting the kickoff at their own 36-yard line and, four plays later, Jesse Martin connected with Casey Robottom on a 61-yard reception for the go-ahead touchdown.

Sellars’ PAT boosted the score to 14-7 with 3:03 on the first quarter clock.

Again, the kickoff went to the Cardinals, but this time, the possession ended in a punt. St. Charles tried to gain an advantage but themselves punted.

This time, the Cardinals drove from midfield to the Comet 7-yard line, from where Zach Norris scored with 8:32 left in the second quarter to knot the score at 14-14, with Robichaux’s PAT.

On the kickoff, though, Casey Robottom received and scrambled 97 yards for a touchdown, bringing the Comet fans to their feet, and pushing St. Charles out front, 21-14.

But E.D. White was f ar from done. In their next possession, they drove 71 yards in six plays to where quarterback Nolan Dumas scored on a 51-yard run, again to tie the score at 21-21.

After two interceptions and a fumble recovery, the ball was back in Cardinal hands, and Daniel Naul scored again with 32 seconds left in the third to push E.D. White ahead 28-21 at the half.

In the third quarter, after the Comet defense stalled the Cardinals, Martin connected with Matt Sutton on a 72-yard touchdown pass to again tie the score at 28-28.

After another fumble and another interception, the Comets successfully blocked a Cardinal field goal try w ith 9:03 in the fourth quarter.

Finally, St. Charles regained possession on a punt reception wit 1:11 remaining in the game, and started at the Cardinal 30-yard line.

Four plays later, Ben Sellars lined up at the left hash mark, aimed with the wind and booted the ball, end over end, between the uprights to take the victory away from the E.D. White Cardinals with 0:09 remaining in the game for the 31-28 win.
