Comets win first game, lose next three

The Belle Chasse Lady Cardinals secured at least a second place finish in district 7-III with a 19-25, 25-22, 25-20, 27-25 victory over St. Charles Catholic Thursday afternoon in LaPlace. Sara Burdin led the way with eight kills and five aces. Katie Jackson also had 19 digs in the victory for Belle Chasse.

Like in other district matches, the Lady Comets started out by winning game one. With the Lady Comets leading 3-2, four consecutive return errors gave St. Charles Catholic a 7-2 lead. An ace from SCC server Bridget Millet gave the Lady Comets a 9-4 lead.

The Lady Comets got solid front court play in the first game. A kill from hitter Angelle Cupit followed by a tip from Mary Clement gave St. Charles Catholic a 12-6 lead.

St. Charles Catholic maintained control of end of the first game, holding no less than a three-point lead.

Back-to-back kills from Cupit and Felicia Taylor made the score 20-15 St. Charles Catholic. A net violation by SCC made it 22-19. However, three consecutive points by the Lady Comets gave them victory in the first game.

Belle Chasse jumped out to a quick 7-3 lead in the second game. The Lady Comets were able to get back into the game thanks to the serving of Amanda Savoie.

Savoie scored three aces while she served. One of her aces tied the score 7-7. The turning point in the second game happened with the score tied 10-10.

Belle Chasse would go on a 10-2 run to open up a 20-12 lead. A return error by Belle Chasse snapped the run.

Although the run by Belle Chasse appeared to invigorate the Lady Comets. Immediately then went on a 9-1 run to close the gap. The Lady Comets offense was hot as they only scored one point on a return error. Four consecutive kills, three of which were courtesy of Cupit, pulled St. Charles Catholic to within two, 21-19. St. Charles Catholic was able to tie the game for the fourth time following two straight aces from Savoie.

Belle Chasse, however, went on to score the last three points of the game to give them a 25-22 victory.

Each team had their moments in the third game. Belle Chasse opened up an 11-4 lead early only to see it go away and cling to a 14-13 lead.

Trailing 18-13, SCC roared back to take a 20-18 lead. Cupit and Savoie each had more than one kill during the rally.

However, the Lady Cardinals battled back and reclaimed the lead thanks to many errors by the Lady Comets.

The fourth game was memorable. Belle Chasse had enjoyed a comfortable lead throughout the fourth game. In fact, they were one point away from winning the match, leading 24-15. With a never-say-die attitude, SCC scored nine consecutive points to tie the game 24-24. The Lady Comets could not hold off Belle Chasse, however, as the Lady Comets were called for a net violation, giving SCC the 27-25 win.
