LAPLACE – Slogging it out on a muddy field, and despite crippling turnovers on each side, the St. Charles Catholic High Comets pulled out a 10-0 victory over the visiting St. James High Wildcats.
St. Charles fumbled three times, recovering two. St. James quarterbacks threw a total of three interceptions.
Fortunately for the Comets, St. Charles got on the board quickly, as the game quickly relied heavily on defense to keep the Wildcats away from the end zone.
St. James accepted the opening kickoff and drove to the Comet 39 yard line until they gave up the ball on a 22-yard punt which started the Comets off at their own 20.
Tyrell Fenroy quickly carried three times and Jarvis Sanders once until Jesse Martin unleashed a pass to Matt Sutton for a 58-yard touchdown pass with 6:12 remaining in the first quarter. The PAT byh Ben Sellars was good for the 7-0 score.
Fenroy was to carry 21 times in the course of the game, accounting for most of the Comet running game.
The Wilccats accepted the kickoff at their own 18 but were quickly four and out, with their punt landing at their own 43-yard line with 8:06 remaining in the first quarter.
Soon, though, a Comet fumble on their next possessioon handed the ball to the Wildcats at their own 39-yard line, which launched a drive to the Comet 22-yard line.
Soon, early in the second quarter, a St. James pass was snared by Jared Nowell, who returned the ball to the Wildcat 46 on a 37-yard run.
This set up the Comets for their next scoring attempt, a 32-yard field goal try with 9:54 left in the second quarter fell short.
The remainder of the first half and the third quarter were uneventful, with no scoring and no turnovers. The period was marked only by two knocked down punts.
The second punt blocked turned into a fumble and St. Charles had possession, headed into the fourth quarter.
However, a fumble was recovered by Casey Narcisse for the Wildcats at their own 10-yard line. This possession, however, lasted only three plays, when Brody Leake snared an interception for St. Charles, who then fumbled and that was picked up by Matt Heltz at the St. James 14-yard line.
That set up St. Charles for their second score four plays later, with a 23-yard field goal successfully booted by Sellars with 9:28 left in the fourth quarter.
Nick Narcisse was quarterbacking for the Wildcats, coming in for Antonio Phillips, and drove St. James from their own 22 to the Comet 23-yard line.
At this point, Chad Laborde intercepted for the Comets at the St. Charles 6-yard line.
The Comets drove up field, most spectacularly with a 35-yard run by Fenroy to just past midfield.
However, nothing came of that and the Comets concentrated on clock control, until St. Charles gave up the ball on downs with four seconds remaining, in time for a last unsuccessful pass.
