L’Observateur has been published since 1913 and serves St. James, St. John the Baptist and St. Charles parishes, known as the River Parishes in south Louisiana.

L’Observateur is published twice a week – Wednesday and Saturday. It features local news, sports, education and editorials, local and national columnists, a community section, classifieds and a weekly business page.

L’Observateur also publishes a companion product called The River Parishes Extra, an abbreviated newspaper designed to carry business advertising to all households in the River Parishes. The River Parishes Extra is distributed each Thursday.

L’Observateur is a member of the Louisiana Press Association. It is the official journal of the St. John the Baptist School Board and the St. John Parish Council.

L’Observateur is part of the Pontchartrain Newspaper Network, which includes four papers – L’Observateur, the Slidell Sentry News, The Daily News of Bogalusa and The News Banner of Covington. The Pontchartrain Newspaper Network is owned by Wick Communications Inc., which owns about 40 newspapers throughout the country.
