LAPLACE-The game may have not mattered that much when it comes to playoff seeding, but a chance to pick up a confidence-building win over a state power slipped through the fingers of the St. Charles Catholic baseball team Saturday afternoon.

Blowing a 7-2 lead, the Comets were defeated by John Curtis, 13-9 at home on a beautiful Saturday day for a ballgame.

The loss drops the Comets to 15-9-2 overall, but they still remain a perfect 6-0 in district 10-3A play.

Steven Duhe (5-1) picked up his first loss of the season on the mound for St. Charles Catholic. He was apart of a sixth inning that saw the Comets pitching staff allow nine runs and watch their 7-5 lead switch to a 14-7 deficit.

The big hits of the inning off Duhe, who didn’t record an out in the inning, were back-to-back home runs for the Patriots.

Disappointed that his team was unable to come away with the victory, St. Charles Catholic Head Coach Paul Waguespack said his squad must refocus and double their efforts as they return to district play this week.

“You want to win every time that you play,” Waguespack said. “You don’t want to go out there and lose a ballgame. We seemed to play well early, but for whatever reason late in the game, particularly in that sixth inning, we just were not able to get the job done.

“The good news is that this does not derail what we are trying to accomplish and that is win a district championship.”
