RESERVE — As exciting as Riverside’s thrilling 5-4 win over Imperial Sugar was this past Monday, there’s something to be said for a good old fashion butt whipping.

That’s what the Supreme Mustangs of Assumption got Thursday afternoon when they came to Reserve to take on the Rebels for a Swampland Summer League North division match-up, in a game that the home team ran away with for a 20-2 win.

Things didn’t look all that one-sided right off of the bat despite the fact that Riverside took a 4-0 lead in the first inning, thanks in large part to a two RBI single by Timmy Teague. The Mustangs were able to post one run in the top of the second to get some momentum and make it look like the Rebels had a game on their hands, but pitcher Donny Terrio and the Riverside defense tightened up and would not allow another run until the fifth inning of play when the game was already well in hand. Terrio did find himself in a couple of jams in the game, such as one in the third inning when the Mustangs were down by five but had a runner get into scoring range before the Rebs could record two outs. But with some savvy pitching from the mound, Terrio worked his way out of those spots with strikeouts and groundouts when he needed them.

By the fourth inning of play Riverside held a 6-1 lead and poured it all on with their side on offense. It started with hits by Teague and Steib, and ran through the batting order all the way to Gavin Richmond who tripled to left field, giving the Rebels a 13-1 lead.

Reserves came in for the Rebels next inning and found about as much success. A string of batters-turned-base-runners pushed in seven more runs before the Mustangs got their last chance and the game was called before the fifth inning was over.

The Rebels have two more home games scheduled this week. On Monday they will face Thibodaux and on Tuesday they will host E.D. White. Game times are set for 5 p.m.
