Brooke Becker scored 28 points and Michelle Marzoni scored 10 as St. Charles moved to 3-1 on Saturday, defeating Salmen at the Ponchatoula Tournament, 52-46.

Becker’s hot shooting was among the key factors in the win, as well as some increased defensive intensity late in the game from St. Charles.

“Salmen is a much bigger team than we are,” said St. Charles Coach Erin Remondet. “Our defense improved by a great margin in the second half.”

St. Charles also defeated Christian Life in the tournament on Friday, 45-41, but fell to Chapelle Thursday, 47-32.

Marzoni scored 22 points in the win over Christian Life, while Becker scored 14.

Against Chapelle, Becker led the team with 16 points while Marzoni scored 15.

The Comets overcame what was a very physical Christian Life team to edge out the win, said Remondet.

But Chapelle proved to be too much for the Comets, particuarly in the second half. St. Charles trailed by 11 at halftime, but Chapelle increased the lead gong forward.

“They just took off after halftime,” said Remondet.

The Comets opened the season on Tuesday with a come from behind victory over Belle Chasse. Becker scored 23 and Marzoni scored 15.

St. Charles did not lead at all in the game until under a minute was remaining.

“We were able to slowly chip away at them,” Remondet said. “We made our free throws down the stretch.”

The win was huge, Remondet said, for the confidence of her team.

“In the past, we haven’t been a team that’s come from behind,” Remondet said. “If we had one bad quarter, we’d mentally shut down. I think the improvement has a lot to do with our senior leaders this year.”
