LAPLACE – Right out of the gate, it looked like St. Charles might have their hands full when Donaldsonville held the Comets to just six points on their home court through the first eight minutes of play. But the SCC defense kept a potent Tiger team in check while the offense found it’s rhythym and St. Charles recovered to take a convincing, but hard-fought 81-59 district win.
“That first quarter was a tough start,” said SCC coach Jeff Montz, “but our defense gave our offense a chance to come around. [Donaldsonville] has got a lot of good athletes and they play fast. In the last five minutes, it was just up and down the court.”
That fast tempo was established from the onset, but by the Donaldsonville team, as they took a 14-6 lead through the first quarter. John Jones, of the Tigers, had a hand in that with eight points in the opening period while Demarcus Bernard and Vincent Rollo were the only Comets to score.
But the second quarter was a much different story as the SCC offense came alive and posted 21 points with a balanced attack. Bernard, Austin Martin and Jonathan Bonura each had multiple baskets to put St. Charles ahead 27-24 going into halftime.
After the break, Donaldsonville’s Jones and Jonathan Smith sparked the Tigers offense to a 17 point quarter, but Bonura kept the momentum in SCC’s favor with three three pointers and a pair of free throws in the period.
So with a ten point lead heading into the final eight minutes, St. Charles poured it on with a 30-18 run as Donaldsonville moved into a pressure defense but was unable to prevent the Comets from keeping pace.
