The offense wasn’t at its best, but the St. Charles defense looked to be in midseason form on Thursday as the Comets downed St. Michael in a scrimmage at SCC, 14-10.

The Warriors scored one touchdown on an interception return, and kicked a field goal. But the SCC defense held firm all evening, and wouldn’t allow an offensive drive to finish in the endzone.

“I was very pleased with our defensive effort,” said St. Charles Coach Frank Monica. “Some of our guys who hadn’t started before played well. We tackled well, and worked a lot of guys in.”

The offense wasn’t as sharp. The first team did manage to generate two touchdowns, but as a team, the Comets turned the ball over six times.

“That really tells the story,” Monica said. “We’re not going to win many games if we turn it over six times. The number one thing for us is to take care of the football. We have to be more security conscious.”

Comets running back Courtland Taylor scored on a 20-yard run. Nick Reine also got in on the offensive action, scoring on a run himself.

Monica said that his team isn’t yet in the condition it needs to be in, but that it would come with increased practice time – something that nicer weather would most certainly aid.

“Our conditioning was sub par,” he said. “It’s a little bit to blame on the weather. We just haven’t been able to get out there as much as we’d like.”
