Riverside-based Fatty’s Restaurant bounced back in a big way from a series of losses, winning at East Ascension-based McMakin Financial 7-1 over the weekend.

Ritchie Terrio (2-2) pitched the complete game and earned the win, allowing five hits and walking only one. He struck out four.

“Ritchie had another good outing,” said Fatty’s Coach Britt Waguespack. “We were able to get some timely hits at the right times, and that gets us back on the right track.”

Waguespack said that his team relied on “small ball” more than usual in the game, bunting runners over and stealing bases to try and manufacture runs.

Simply put, it worked against McMakin.

“We haven’t been stringing together a lot of hits,” said Waguespack. “It’s another way to get runners home.”

McMakin scored a run in the first to take an early 1-0 lead. But Fatty’s (4-7) Dylan Becnel slapped a two-run single in the second inning to score Dylan Martin and Remi Poirrier, netting Fatty’s the lead for good.

In the third, Bobby Smith walked and stole second before Justin Newbauer hit a grounder to advance him to third. Austin Vicknair’s sacrifice fly made it 3-1.

Fatty’s landed a knockout punch in the sixth, scoring four runs including RBIs by Jake Roussel and Martin.

Today, Fatty’s will attempt to earn its first Second District win as it hosts Townsend Homes (St. Charles). Tomorrow, the team heads to Ft. Walton Beach, Fla. to play in a tournament, before returning to face off with Service Master (John Curtis), Otto Candies (Hahnville) and Bell Office Machines (East Jefferson) in district games.

Fatty’s will likely have to win at least three of those district games to qualify for the district playoffs.

That would be viewed as a bonus for Waguespack, who views the summer as a chance to rebuild for next prep season.

 “Guys are getting the opportunity to step up right now,” said Waguespack. “We’re glad right now to get them some learning experience.”
