Brusly was riding high after a 4-1 start to the season. But on Friday night, the Panthers encountered an angry Lutcher team.
Gavin Webster passed for four touchdowns and ran for two more to lead the Bulldogs to a 66-13 district win at Lutcher’s “Dog Yard” on Friday, in the process bouncing back from a loss to rival St. Charles Catholic the week prior.
The Bulldogs scored on their first three possessions, and were never seriously threatened — the score was 41-7 at halftime.
Lutcher forced five turnovers and outgained the Panthers 374-152 in total offense.
The six total touchdowns that Webster accounted for are a career high. He was 7-of-14 for 189 yards in the air, and added six carries for 37 yards on the ground on top of that.
Jarvis Landry did much of that damage, hauling in two passes for 111 yards and two scores. Landry also had a 62-yard touchdown run on an end around.
Frederick Thomas scored three times, including two kickoff returns for scores in the game’s second half. He also intercepted a pass.
The Bulldogs rushed for 185 yards, and did it by committee in the absence of starter Daniel Taylor, who did not start due to an injury sustained the previous week at St. Charles. Landry’s 62 yards led all rushers, followed by Brandon St. Pierre, who ran seven times for 61 yards.
But it was Thomas who started the game off with a score on a 28-yrd run that put Lutcher ahead 7-0 with 6:53 left in the first quarter.
A little over two minutes later, Webster threw his first touchdown pass of the night at the 4:33 mark when he found Landry for a 55-yard score, making it 14-0.
Webster made a big play with his legs on his next score, when took off from the pocket and scored on a 38-yard run that made it 21-0 with 1:28 left in the quarter.
Brusly had a brief answer in the second quarter. Panther quarterback Chet Simoneaux found receiver Kasey Porter for a 15-yard touchdown, cutting the Lutcher lead to 21-7.
But Brusly couldn’t sustain a push. Less than a minute later, Webster dialed up Landry for a the second time and a 59-yard score with 4:25 left in the half, making it 28-7 and permanently seizing the momentum.
Webster would find Reginald Jackson and St. Pierre for 29 and 27-yard touchdowns, respectively, before the half, netting the quarterback a five touchdown half and his team a 41-7 lead.
Blake Rome had 14 tackles and Derick Matherne had two sacks to lead the Lutcher defense.
