The Riverside girls track and field team stood tall last Wednesday as it defeated five other teams at Riverside.

The Rebels outlasted second place St. Charles for the victory.

“We’re pretty excited,” said Riverside coach Joe Trosclair. “We’ve got a lot of junior and sophomore girls on the team, so they’ll be here for awhile.”

It was the Rebels second meet of the season.

Riverside’s boys team finished third at the meet. The Comet boys finished fourth.

Reserve Christian, St. James, White Castle and Fisher all competed at the event.

The Riverside girls swept all three relay team events. Maurie Laiche, Heidi Garcich, Taylor Terrio and Shea Lafountain teamed up to take the 400 and 800 meter relays, while Terrio, Heather Cancienne, Shelby Deslatte and Chelsy Cupit took the 1600 meter run.

Megan Malik (shot put), Garcich (triple jump), Cancienne (100 meter hurdles), Laiche (200 meter dash) and Deslatte (800 meter run) all took individual first place honors in girls events for Riverside.

Among boys, Justin Newbauer (high jump), Matt Nobile (800 meter run) and Josh Tassin (400 meter run) took first place finishes for the Rebels.

Trosclair noted Newbauer’s performance as being particularly impressive for someone participating in his first meet after basketball season. He recorded a height of 5-10 on his high jump.

“He did really well for his first time out,” said Trosclair.

Reyna Lubin (1600 meter run) and Katelyn Vitrano (400 meter run) were among girls first place winners for St. Charles.

“We’ve got a lot of new faces,” said SCC coach Jerry Schexnayder. “We’ve got a lot of people who scored for us, if not a lot of first place finishes.”

Tyler Roussel (100 meter dash) Justin Vicknair (100 and 300 meter hurdles) Brett Landry (1600 meter run) and Chris Graugnard (3200 meter run) all were first place winners for SCC.

The Comets also placed first in the 1600-meter relay event.

“I thought we did pretty well,” said Schexnayder. “Overall, I’m pleased with where we are right now.”
