Chasity Everson’s double in the bottom of the seventh inning brought Rayia Boudoin home for the winning run as West St. John won its season opener over St. James last Tuesday, 13-12.

The hit came after Boudoin tied the game at 12 by knocking in Ormoni Favorite.

The Rams had to rally in the final three innings after falling behind 10-4. WSJ trailed 12-11 in the final inning.

“I’m proud of the girls for fighting back,” said West St. John coach Brandon Dumas. “They could have packed it in at 10-4, but they wouldn’t do it.”

Everson went 4-for-5 at the plate with three RBIs on the evening. Kyla Morris was 3-for-4 with two RBIs. Kori Herbert went 3-for-5 with an RBI.

Deveny Baptiste (1-0) got the win for the Rams.

Each team scored two runs in each of the first two innings. But the Wildcats made a push in the third, scoring six to give themselves a commanding lead.

St. James slowed down in the next four innings, however, crossing home plate only twice.

In the meantime, WSJ didn’t break their offensive stride, scoring at least one run in every inning of the game – and seven over the last three.

“We were aggressive on the bases,” Dumas said. “We stole some bases and we hit it well. It was a good start to the season.”

The bad news for West St. John came in the form of an injury. Baptiste was injured by a line drive in the top of the seventh inning, and it sidelined her for the Rams’ next game, a 16-1 loss on Thursday at Ecole Classique.

Boudoin (0-1) took the loss in the first start of her career with WSJ (1-1).

“She was more nervous than anything,” said Dumas.

Everson picked up where she left off in the last game, knocking in the first run of the game to put the Rams ahead.

But Ecole took over from there, and never looked back.
