Cedric Jenkins scored 22 points to lead Reserve Christian as it clinched at least share of the District 10-C title on Tuesday, besting Grand Isle 90-59 in Reserve.
The Eagles can clinch the district outright and successfully defend its 10-C crown with a win at Phoenix on Monday.
“We got out to a slow start,” said RCS coach Timmy Byrd. “But what we wanted to do was place more emphasis on defense. Grand Isle played hard, but I think we wore them down in the second and third quarters.”
That certainly appeared to be the case. Grand Isle led 17-14 after a quarter, but the Eagles outscored Grand Isle 48-22 in the second and third quarters.
Chris Roussell scored 17 for Reserve (38-6, 9-0). Ed Gallina scored 16, and Louis Dabney added eight. Eight Eagles scored in the game.
Reserve topped Grand Isle (25-12, 4-3) 77-69 at Grand Isle last week in the first meeting between the teams.
“Grand Isle’s having a real good season. But I think they might have caught our guys by surprise in the first game. We were motivated this time,” said Byrd.
Byrd said with the sheer number of games his team has played, particularly over the last month, practice time has been hard to come by, and the Eagles intensity had waned.
Not so on Tuesday, where Byrd said his team looked to have its fire back.
“We dropped a few games (in January) in part due to not having the same toughness we had earlier in the season,” said Byrd. “But our guys came ready to play against Grand Isle. We were focused on getting back our toughness.”
